Where to stay in Tromsø: four areas, not a hotel list

Why this page lists areas and not hotels

An area is here only if a source we opened ourselves says where it stands in relation to the centre and, where anyone publishes it, how you travel between the two and what that costs. Three of the four rows below carry a checked distance or a walking time. The fourth, Kvaløya, carries an operator’s own phrase and nothing more, and its row says so.

A criterion about distances is a strange thing for an accommodation page, and it is what we were left with. We tried seven property addresses on 19 September 2026 and came away with no published nightly rate at all, so a list of hotels built the way we build the Rovaniemi one would have had nothing in it. The last section sets out exactly what each attempt returned, because how a page failed is the only part of the failure that is useful to you.

That is not a Norwegian peculiarity, incidentally. Five of the six properties on our Rovaniemi accommodation list publish no nightly rate either. The difference is that there we had six named places worth listing anyway, and here the rate was the only thing we could have checked.

The four areas, and what it costs to leave each one

The centre earns its default status on one sentence from Visit Tromsø, that the city centre is a good size for exploring on foot, and on two pieces of corroboration. The Polar Museum, at the north end of the centre, says it is within walking distance of most of the town’s hotels and places to stay. The airport bus’s own stop list then names Moxy, Polaria, Storgata, Prostneset bus terminal, Scandic Ishavshotel and The Dock Hotel by Scandic, which is a hotel cluster described from the other direction.

Tromsdalen is the only other area where the walk is short enough to change the calculation. Twenty minutes over the bridge puts you in the centre, and the same twenty minutes puts a centre-based visitor at the cathedral, so on distance the two sides are an even choice. On everything else, price included, we have nothing that separates them.

Fares, and the app that sells them

Buses are how you cross between the areas above, and the fares are published, so here they are. From 1 February 2026 a single adult fare within one zone is 50 NOK, an off-peak single is 30 NOK, and a child of 6 to 17 or a senior of 67 and over pays 25 NOK. A 24-hour ticket is 140 NOK for an adult and 70 NOK for a child or a senior. Cash is not accepted on board at all, and Visit Tromsø’s own advice is to plan the journey and buy the ticket through the Svipper app.

The airport is its own case. The express bus costs an adult 125 NOK single or 200 NOK return, and a child of 4 to 15 years 80 NOK or 130 NOK, for a ride of about 20 minutes. City bus routes 40 and 42 stop at the airport as well, and the town fares above are lower than the express bus charges.

The bridge is shut to cars until 1 November 2026

From 17 August to 1 November 2026 the Tromsø bridge is closed to ordinary vehicle traffic. Buses use the Tromsøysund tunnel between 17:00 and 07:00, and anyone on foot or on a bike can cross the bridge at any time.

Both of those dates matter, and printing only the first one would be the sort of half-fact that ruins a booking. The closure ends on 1 November 2026, before the winter season this site is mostly written for, so it is not a reason to avoid Tromsdalen in January. It is a very good reason to check the current arrangement if you are travelling in October.

If you do stay out of town and drive, studded tyres are mandatory from October to May because of ice on the roads. Visit Tromsø tells anyone unused to Arctic driving to slow down or use the buses, and we would take the second half of that advice.

What we left out, and why

No nightly rate appears anywhere on this page because we found none to print. Seven addresses, on 19 September 2026. Three served a page with no rate on it: entertromso.no, the Clarion Hotel The Edge page on strawberry.no, and tromsocamping.no, which builds its content in the browser, so a price may well exist there that a fetch cannot see. One timed out, the Scandic Ishavshotel page on scandichotels.com. One returned a 403 and refused us, the Radisson Blu Tromsø page. Two returned 404s on addresses we had guessed at, for Thon Hotel Tromsø and Smarthotel Tromsø, which is evidence that our guess was wrong and tells you nothing whatever about those two hotels.

We have no opinion on any property in Tromsø. The hotels named in the table’s supporting text are named because a bus timetable and a museum’s directions named them first, which tells you where they are and not whether they are any good.

Three more things people ask for and will not find here. Whether Tromsdalen is cheaper than the centre: commonly said, and we have no rate for either side, so we cannot say it. Step-free access at any property: not researched, and the one accessibility fact we do hold is on the things to do page, where the cable car has suspended wheelchair access during its rebuild. And how far ahead to book, or how prices move between November and March: no source we opened addresses it, and a confident booking-window rule invented at a desk is exactly what this page exists not to do.

One caveat for anyone tempted by Visit Tromsø’s own accommodation listings, which we used only to establish that Kvaløya counts as a separate area. We do not know whether entries on it are paid placements. We took no property from it, so it does not affect anything above, and the next person to use that list should settle the question first.
