Lapland compared

Five comparisons, each written as a table and a verdict: Rovaniemi against Levi, Finnish against Swedish Lapland, Tromsø against Rovaniemi, Finland against Norway for the Northern Lights, and a Northern Lights cruise against a week on land in Lapland. Each one also says when the answer flips, because the right choice changes with the month and the party.

The five that matter

Rovaniemi or Levi

A city with Santa Claus Village and a museum, against Finland’s largest ski resort. Which suits your trip, and when the answer flips.

Finnish or Swedish Lapland

Two countries, one region: what differs in getting there, in what there is to do, and in what it costs.

Tromsø or Rovaniemi

Coastal Norway against inland Finland: milder against colder, what that does to an aurora trip, and why nobody can tell you which has clearer skies.

How we write a comparison

Each page is a table with the same kinds of rows: what each place or kind of trip is, getting there, darkness, snow, crowds, the price band, what there is to do when the weather cancels a tour, and who each one is not for. Then a section on when the answer flips, because most of these decisions turn on one thing: the month, the party, or whether you ski.

No comparison here names a winner overall. Where a figure could not be confirmed from a primary source, the page says so instead of filling the gap, and where two places are close, it says that too.

Still to come: comparisons between the Finnish bases themselves, and between the kinds of trip.

Who this is not for

A comparison cannot choose for you if you have not settled what the trip is for. If you are still deciding between a ski week, a Santa trip and an aurora trip, start with trip types instead.
