Rovaniemi hotels: where to stay, by area

How we chose what is here

We group Rovaniemi’s accommodation by area first, because which part of town you stay in changes your trip more than which specific building you pick within it: whether you can walk everywhere, whether you need a car, and whether you are close to Santa Claus Village or a quiet ski hill. Within each area we name a place only when its own page (or, failing that, Visit Rovaniemi’s own listing for it) told us what it is, where it sits, and its facilities. Several properties do not publish a room rate on their own site at all, and where that happens we say “price on request”. Quoting a third-party booking platform would put a number on the page that is not the property’s own and that changes by the day.

City centre: walk everywhere

The centre suits you if you arrive without a car. Visit Rovaniemi’s own advice is that walking is the way to get around the town, and local buses, including bus 8 to Santa Claus Village, run through it.

Arctic City Hotel is not for anyone wanting to be away from traffic and streetlight: it sits on a central street, which is exactly its appeal for a short, car-free trip. Postmaster Hotel is not for anyone who wants to compare a published rate before they enquire; check current availability directly.

Ounasvaara: the ski hill on your doorstep

Ounasvaara suits you if you want the trails and the town’s own ski hill close by, with the centre still a short drive away.

Lapland Hotels Ounasvaara Chalets sits beside the Ounasvaara Ski Resort on the Kemijoki riverside, about 3 km from the city centre, with its own restaurant, Thulia. It does not publish a nightly rate on its page; availability and price are through its own online booking store. Not for a car-free trip: at 3 km from the centre, walking is possible but a bus or taxi is the realistic option, and Ounasvaara’s own 11 slopes suit a first go at skiing rather than a full ski holiday.

The Arctic Circle area, near Santa Claus Village

This area suits a trip built around young children and Santa: the airport is about 3 km away, the centre is 8 km away by bus or taxi, and it is where Rovaniemi’s glass-roofed rooms are concentrated.

Neither property publishes a rate on its own site, which is common for this area’s higher-end and family-holiday stock; both direct you to their own booking system for current prices. Arctic TreeHouse Hotel is not for a tight budget: its glass rooms are sold as a premium stay. Santa Claus Holiday Village is not for a car-free day trip into the centre without checking the shuttle times first, since it sits by the village rather than in town.

Outside town: wilderness and aurora cabins

For travellers with a hire car, or happy to use a resort shuttle, resorts outside Rovaniemi trade the walkable centre for quiet and a wider view of the sky.

Apukka Resort sits about 15 km from the city centre and sells Aurora Cabins with a glass roof, up to six guests, plus lakeview suites and villas for larger groups. It runs a daily shuttle to Santa Claus Village and the centre. Its own site gives the season as 1 August 2026 to 4 April 2027, and it does not publish a nightly rate on its page. Not for anyone without a car or willing to rely on the shuttle timetable, and not for a trip between early April and the end of July, which falls outside the season it gives.

What we left out, and why

We did not list every hotel chain represented in Rovaniemi, including Original Sokos Hotel Vaakuna and Scandic’s local property: both appear on Visit Rovaniemi’s own accommodation page, but we could not reach a page of their own, in this research pass, that published a current room rate to sit beside the others above. We also left out short-term apartment rentals and hostels, which change too often for a page like this to keep current; search a booking platform directly for those.
