Ten lines, and the two we left blank

Where this page runs thinner than our Finnish ones

Every Finnish page on this site leans on institutions we have used for years. The Finnish Meteorological Institute for climate, Metsähallitus for the parks, Finavia for the airports. In Norway we have one relationship of that kind, with MET Norway, and we reach it through Yr, which MET Norway runs with NRK. That single source is why the temperatures here are as solid as anything we publish. The daylight is arithmetic, calculated for this latitude with the same tool our Finnish pages use, so it is sound for a different reason. Nothing else on this page has either footing.

The rest comes from Visit Tromsø, Tromsø kommune, Avinor and a handful of operators writing about themselves. Each page was opened once, on 19 September 2026, by one person, and none of it was corroborated against a second source of the kind we would insist on in Finland. Nobody here has been to Tromsø.

Two gaps remain. Yr names its station and calls its figure a 30-year normal without printing which thirty years; MET Norway’s own METreport 05/2021 says Norway’s standard normals are now 1991 to 2020, so we assume Yr uses them, but Yr does not say. And we looked for a visitor number for Tromsø, to set beside the one Visit Rovaniemi publishes, and found none.

We also recommend no one here. We have checked no Tromsø operator’s licensing, safety record, animal welfare policy or guide qualifications, which falls short of what we hold ourselves to in Finland, so the things to do in Tromsø list prices things and stops there.

Polar night, midnight sun, and the months in between

The sun rises for the last time on 27 November 2026 and stays up for 21 minutes. From 28 November 2026 to 14 January 2027 it does not rise at all, and on 15 January 2027 it comes back for 38 minutes. Visit Tromsø publishes the same window as approximately 27 November to 15 January, with a few hours of twilight each day. Further south on the same coast, the Lofoten Islands have a shorter run without sunrise.

Even that return date is generous. The town is ringed by mountains, and Visit Tromsø says the sun is usually not visible from central Tromsø until later in January, after it has technically cleared the horizon. No source we opened gives a date for that.

At the other end, the sun stops setting. Visit Tromsø and the cable car’s own site both put the midnight sun at around 20 May to 22 July, and both define it as the whole solar disc above the horizon for 24 hours at a stretch. A plain sunrise and sunset calculation gives a slightly wider window, because it uses a looser definition, so treat the tourist dates as the conservative ones.

Aurora season runs from late August to early April, and Visit Tromsø’s explanation for the town’s reputation is geographical: it lies directly below the auroral oval. Its front page gives a narrower season in one place and the wider one in another, and we have taken the dates from its dedicated Northern Lights page and not from whichever end flatters a trip. The same page says there are never any guarantees, and that the more nights you spend the better your chances get. What there is to do, and what carries a price

Our list of things to do in Tromsø takes only the places whose own site publishes a price, which leaves it short and weighted towards museums and one cable car. It reflects what we could verify, so do not read it as a ranking of the town.

Whale watching sits outside that list for a different reason. It takes a full day, well away from the city, so it shapes the whole trip where a museum fills an afternoon. The sky has its own page, Tromsø and the Northern Lights.

Which part of town to sleep in

No property we could reach publishes a nightly rate on its own site, so there is no price for a bed here; the attempts are listed one by one on the page below.

That leaves the choice a price would usually settle: which part of town to be in, and what it costs to get out of it. Where to stay in Tromsø takes four areas, with the walking times, the bus routes and the fares.

Flights, the airport bus, and a ship that calls twice a day

Avinor lists 17 airlines at Tromsø Airport, British Airways, easyJet, SAS, Norwegian, Wizz Air, Air France, Austrian Airlines, Eurowings, Iberia, Vueling, Danish Air Transport and Edelweiss Air among them. That page names no routes, and the dedicated direct-flights page would not load for us, so we could not confirm one UK route, its carrier or the months it runs. Treat the airline list as a list of airlines. It is no winter timetable from your airport.

Domestically it is simpler. Visit Tromsø gives several daily flights from Oslo, about 1 hour 50 minutes, on SAS, Widerøe and Norwegian, plus direct flights from several European destinations it does not name.

From the airport, 5 km out, the express bus run by Best Arctic charges an adult 125 NOK single and 200 NOK return, a child of 4 to 15 years 80 NOK and 130 NOK, and takes about 20 minutes into town. City bus routes 40 and 42 also stop at the airport.

There is no railway. Visit Tromsø puts it directly: the nearest stations are Narvik, for the Swedish line through Abisko and Kiruna to Stockholm, and Fauske, for the Norwegian line to Trondheim and Oslo. By sea, Hurtigruten and Havila call twice a day on the Bergen to Kirkenes route, about 64 hours out of Bergen or 35 out of Kirkenes. By road, Visit Tromsø says long-distance buses link Tromsø with Alta, Narvik and Fauske all year, and with Rovaniemi in the summer months and from December to March. The Finnish operator’s own page shows only a summer service to Rovaniemi, so ask about your dates before you plan a winter crossing by bus; our guide to flights to Tromsø sets the two accounts side by side.

Finavia’s route listing for summer and autumn 2026 showed a direct Rovaniemi to Tromsø flight in that season, and nothing we opened says whether an airline flies it in winter, so check the carrier’s own timetable for your dates and do not assume the summer route repeats.

Set beside Rovaniemi, one row at a time

The coast is milder, and this is the one comparison we can make cleanly, because both columns below are monthly mean temperatures.

Two institutes, one table, and only one of them prints its reference period. The Finnish figures are FMI’s for 1991 to 2020 and say so. Yr’s are the 30-year normal for its own station and do not say which years. Read the gap between the columns as real, and the last tenth of a degree as something we would not argue about.

There is no snow row, and there will not be one. FMI gives Finnish stations a median depth for a date across thirty winters. MET Norway publishes what the snow measured on a given morning. Those are two different kinds of number, and setting them side by side would produce a comparison that looks sourced and means nothing. If snow depth is what decides your trip, Rovaniemi has figures you can lean on and Tromsø does not.
