Privacy notice

We collect your details only when you send a trip request, we use them to answer it, and we delete them when you ask. This notice describes what the site does today. It is with a professional for review before launch, and any change will be dated here.

Who is responsible for your details

Explore Lapland, the trip-planning service published at explore-lapland.com, decides what happens to the details you send. The registered company behind it, and a direct address for data questions, are being added to this notice; until they are here, send a trip request with your question in the notes box and we will answer by email.

What we collect, and only when you send it

When you send a trip request we keep what you give us:

  • when you want to travel and for how many nights
  • who is travelling, including children’s ages if you give them
  • what matters to you on the trip, anything else you write, and your budget choice
  • your name, your email address, and a phone number if you give one
  • that you agreed to this notice, and when, and whether you asked for planning notes by email
  • the page you sent the request from, the page that brought you there, and any campaign tags in the address

We do not keep your IP address with your request. We do use it once, and not in a form anyone can read back: to stop the form being submitted over and over, the site keeps a one-way scrambled version of the address, with no name or request attached, and deletes it after an hour. The original address is never written down. Where the site sits behind Cloudflare, the address Cloudflare passes on is the one scrambled.

Why we use it

To answer your trip request and plan your trip, because you asked us to. If you ticked the box for seasonal planning notes, to send those, until you unsubscribe.

Who sees it

  • The planner who answers trip requests.
  • Operators who could deliver your trip: to quote it, we may share your dates, party and interests with them. We do not sell your details.
  • The companies that host this website and send its email, which store and carry the details for us.
  • Google, only if you allow measurement (below). We do not send it what you write in a trip request.

How long we keep it

The period is not set yet, and this section will state it before launch. Until it is, we keep a trip request only as long as we need it to answer you and to answer any question you raise afterwards, and you can ask us to delete yours at any time.

Cookies and browser storage

We set no cookies for visitors unless you allow measurement. Your answers to the trip request are not saved in your browser. Your measurement choice is saved in your browser, so we do not ask on every page.

Measuring visits

A banner at the foot of the site asks whether we can measure your visit. Until you answer, nothing is measured, and if you choose “No measurement”, nothing is. The trip request works either way.

If you choose “Allow measurement”, your browser loads Google Tag Manager, a Google service, and through it the measurement tools we have set up there, so we can count visits and see which pages help people plan. The container holds one tool: Google Analytics 4, measurement ID G-0SLLV3THFD. It sets cookies in your browser and sends Google the pages you view, the page that brought you here, your device, browser and approximate location from your IP address, and events such as scrolling and clicks on links that leave the site. It does not receive anything you type into the trip request. Google keeps the details of individual visits for the period set on our Google Analytics account, which is 2 or 14 months.

We keep your choice for six months, then ask again. You can change it at any time with “Measurement choices” at the foot of every page, and changing it is exactly as easy as making it.

We also keep a count of how the banner is answered, so we can see whether it is understood: one number a day for how many people were asked, how many allowed, how many refused and how many changed their mind, split by language. It is a count and nothing else. No identifier, no address, no page and nothing that could be traced to you goes with it, so this part is not personal data and it happens whether or not you allow measurement.

Your rights

You can ask to see the details we hold about you, correct them, delete them, or stop us using them, and you can withdraw your agreement at any time. Until a direct address is published, send it through the trip request form and write “data request” as the first words in the notes box, so it is handled as that and not as a trip to plan. How we check what we publish is set out in our editorial policy, and who we are is on the about page. You can also complain to the data protection authority where you live; in the United Kingdom that is the Information Commissioner’s Office.
