Lapland airports: which one for your base
Fly into the airport nearest your bed. Rovaniemi Airport is 10 km from the city and 3 km from Santa Claus Village, Kittilä Airport is 15 km from Levi, Ivalo Airport is 25 km from Saariselkä, and Kuusamo Airport, a 30-minute drive from Ruka, is the one for Ruka.

Which Lapland airport serves which base
There is no single Lapland airport. Finavia, the Finnish airport operator, runs four in the region, Rovaniemi, Kittilä, Ivalo and Kemi-Tornio, and lists a fifth, Kuusamo, alongside them. Kuusamo sits outside the Lapland region’s 21 municipalities, but it is the airport for Ruka. Each one is close to a different set of beds, and the transfer at the far end decides more of your day than the flight does.

Finavia also says Kittilä serves Olos, Pyhä-Luosto, Kolari, Muonio, Sodankylä and Enontekiö, and that Kuusamo has bus connections to Salla National Park. Those are longer rides. For a stay at Pyhä-Luosto, Finavia names a bus from Rovaniemi Airport, four a day in winter.

Rovaniemi Airport, for the city and Santa
Rovaniemi Airport is 10 km from the centre of Rovaniemi, and Finavia puts Santa Claus Village three kilometres from the runway. That short hop is why so many Christmas trips land here. The Airport Express and Santa’s Express bus runs to Santa Claus Village and to Rovaniemi railway station, and you buy the ticket on board; the operator’s site says it takes no cash. Taxis wait at three taxi platforms in front of the terminal during the scheduled arrival times, and Finavia says you can pre-book one.
Twelve car hire firms are listed at the airport, and Finavia warns that some open only with a prior reservation. Car hire and winter driving are covered in getting around Lapland. If you want to sleep near the airport, the closest beds are the ones around Santa Claus Village; where to stay in Rovaniemi compares the areas.
Kittilä Airport, the nearest airport to Levi and Ylläs
Search for Levi airport and you land on Kittilä. It is 15 km from Levi and 35 km from Ylläsjärvi at Ylläs, and Levi’s own arrival page calls it Kittilä/Levi airport. Finavia says it has multiple daily connections from Helsinki and scheduled flights from European cities.
The Levi airport bus is run by Tunturilinjat. Its timetables are set by the flights: buses from arriving flights may leave earlier or later than the printed time, depending on when the flight lands and the luggage arrives, and if a flight is cancelled the bus is cancelled too. The adult fare to the Levi stops was 15 EUR on the September and October 2026 timetables, and the operator says schedules and tickets go on sale at the end of the previous month.
Ylläs has its own bus, run by Liikenne Rundgren “for confirmed flight arrivals only”. Its regular season runs from 1 December to 30 April, and outside it the service runs on request, booked in advance. Bought on the bus, a ticket was 22 EUR a person each way to Ylläsjärvi and 26 EUR to Äkäslompolo, and the operator says a ticket bought in advance on Matkahuolto is cheaper. Finavia’s own page says the same of the whole airport: during summer and outside the main season, transfers run on demand and must be booked ahead.
Ivalo Airport, for Saariselkä and Inari
Finavia calls Ivalo the northernmost airport in Finland. It is 11 km from the centre of Ivalo and 25 km from Saariselkä; Visit Inari puts Inari village 50 km away.
Eskelisen Lapin Linjat runs the airport bus to Saariselkä and Kiilopää. It needs no reservation, you pay the driver in cash or by card, and suitcases, backpacks and skis go on board. It runs only when a flight arrives or departs, and not at all if the flight is cancelled. The shuttle to Inari village is different: Finavia describes it as a charter service, and Visit Inari says every transfer has to be booked in advance. Taxis from Ivalo, Saariselkä, Inari and Utsjoki are listed at the terminal, available according to flight schedules.
Kuusamo Airport, for Ruka
Kuusamo Airport is a 30-minute drive from Ruka, in Finavia’s words. It is in North Ostrobothnia, outside the Lapland region, and it is still the airport for a Ruka trip.
A seat on the airport bus to Ruka has to be booked. Ruka’s own page says the bus runs in connection with scheduled flights, can be booked 60 days ahead and must be booked at the latest 24 hours before. When pre-booking began in November 2024, Ruka gave the fare as 15 EUR one way and said a traveller without a ticket could still ask for a spare seat at the airport. Taxis wait in front of the terminal at times matching the flights, and the arrivals screen shows the names of passengers with a pre-booked taxi.
From the UK this winter, Ruka lists airBaltic from London Gatwick and from Manchester on Sundays, 27 December 2026 to 3 January 2027 and 14 to 21 February 2027.
Kemi-Tornio, Enontekiö and Oulu
Kemi-Tornio is a 5-minute drive from Kemi. Finavia says there is no regular bus service to the airport, and that taxis wait in front of it only occasionally, so book a taxi from a local company before you fly.
Enontekiö is no longer Finavia’s. The airport passed to the municipality of Enontekiö on 14 July 2021. The municipality’s tourism site says it has busy charter traffic in winter, and one UK operator, Canterbury Travel, flies its 2026 day trip there. No scheduled route to it turned up in any source we opened, so treat it as an airport a package takes you to rather than one you book yourself. The same site lists Kittilä and Rovaniemi as alternatives, a couple of hours away by hire car, bus or shuttle taxi.
Oulu, which Finavia calls the third busiest airport in Finland, is south of the Lapland region. Visit Rovaniemi mentions it as a way in, with a year-round airBaltic route to Riga.
When your flight lands late
Most airport buses in Lapland are tied to the flights rather than to a clock. At Kittilä the Levi bus waits for the plane and the luggage, and the Ylläs bus runs for confirmed arrivals; at Ivalo the Saariselkä shuttle runs when a flight arrives. Both operators also say a cancelled flight means no bus.
Taxis at Rovaniemi, Kittilä, Ivalo and Kuusamo are there at the scheduled arrival times, which covers a late flight that is on its timetable. A very late arrival, or a trip outside the main season, is where a pre-booked taxi earns its cost, and at Kemi-Tornio you need one whatever time you land. Even in September 2026, the Tunturilinjat timetable had buses leaving Kittilä Airport as late as 22:55. The Rovaniemi Airport Express publishes its timetable on its own site; on 25 September 2026 the one it linked was the summer timetable, so check the winter times before you rely on it after a late landing.
What people get wrong
Booking the airport with the most flights. Rovaniemi has the longest list of routes, and Levi is 15 km from Kittilä. From Rovaniemi to Levi is a bus ride of about two and a half hours.
Assuming a bus will be there outside winter. Kittilä’s transfers run on demand outside the main season, and Ruka’s bus has to be booked a day ahead in every season.
Forgetting that Ruka is not in Lapland. Its airport is in Kuusamo, and Rovaniemi is no shortcut to it.
Choosing a day trip without asking where it lands. Canterbury Travel’s 2026 day trip goes to Enontekiö and The Lapland Experience’s to Rovaniemi, and in December the sun stops rising at Enontekiö while Rovaniemi still has a couple of hours of it. The day-trip page has the dates.
The flights themselves, UK airport by UK airport, are in flights to Lapland.
Who this is not for
Airports in Swedish Lapland and Northern Norway, which this page does not cover. Fares and flight days, which change by the season and are on our flights page. And anyone on a package with its own charter flight: the operator chooses the airport, and on some UK day trips that is Enontekiö.
