Ruka, Finland: is it the right base for you?

Ruka is a large ski resort in the municipality of Kuusamo, with its own airport 30 minutes away, 41 slopes and a season that runs from October to May. It suits skiers and snowboarders who want reliable snow and an easy direct flight; it earns fewer nights if your trip is really about deep Lapland darkness, since Kuusamo sits further south than the resorts the region is best known for.

Marketed as Lapland, mapped as North Ostrobothnia

Ruka sits in the municipality of Kuusamo, and Kuusamo belongs to North Ostrobothnia, outside the Lapland region. Kuusamo’s own municipal site places itself under “the Wellbeing Services County of North Ostrobothnia,” and Metsähallitus files the nearby Oulanka National Park under North Ostrobothnia too.

Ruka’s own tourism marketing blurs this. Ruka.fi’s winter page opens with “a winter holiday in Lapland is the highpoint of every winter,” and its photo captions are routinely tagged “Ruka-Kuusamo, Lapland, Finland.” If a Lapland-specific reason brought you here, such as the polar night, the region’s deepest Sámi culture, or the reindeer-herding areas, we would skip Ruka and book further north. For reliable snow, a big, modern ski resort and an easy flight, the county line matters much less.

41 slopes, 22 lifts, and a long season

Ruka.fi lists 41 slopes and 22 lifts, including three high-speed detachable chairlifts and a gondola. For winter 2026 to 2027 the slopes are open from 2 October 2026 to 2 May 2027, 09:30 to 19:00. The resort’s own description is that it can ski “more than 200 days a year, more than any other ski resort outside the glacier areas in the world,” which it credits to snowmaking.

Rukakeskus, the company that runs the lifts, says that together with Pyhätunturi it holds a market-leading position in Finnish skiing, with more than 20% of the country’s lift ticket sales, on a turnover of about 35 EUR million and around 170 staff. It was named Finland’s Ski Resort of the Year in 2019. It is a big, busy place: the resort’s pedestrian village is built over an underground car park, 320 vehicles by the same account.

The snow compares well with better-known Lapland bases. The nearest official weather station, at Kuusamo airport about 30 minutes from the slopes, recorded a typical (median) snow depth of 52 cm on 15 January and 79 cm on 15 March over 1991 to 2020, deeper at both dates than Rovaniemi’s own airport station. Conditions on the fell itself, higher and more exposed than the valley airport, are often colder and windier than the station figures suggest.

The lowest reading at the airport station in those 30 years was -44.9 °C, in January 1999. Around the shortest day there are about 2 hours 48 minutes between sunrise and sunset at Kuusamo, close to Rovaniemi’s figure for the same date, though the sun still rises every day here as it does across the rest of Finnish Lapland at this latitude.

For the aurora, the latitude counts against Ruka. The Finnish Meteorological Institute names Kuusamo directly, alongside Oulu, as an example of “the central part of Finland,” where it puts the chance of seeing the Northern Lights on a dark, cloudless night at roughly 25%, against roughly 50% at the ski resorts of Levi, Ylläs and Saariselkä further north. Everywhere it needs darkness, a clear sky and solar activity at once; our Northern Lights guide explains why.

Where Ruka sits in the Northern Lights odds FMI puts Kuusamo in its roughly 25% group on a dark, cloudless night, against roughly 50% at the resorts further north.

Ruka weather: the forecast for the resort

For the days you are there, the Finnish Meteorological Institute publishes a forecast for Ruka itself, filed under Kuusamo, hour by hour and up to 15 days ahead. Its observations page gives the latest station readings, snow depth among them, and our Lapland webcams page gathers public cameras if you would rather look. The station table above describes a normal winter at the airport; for the fell on a given day, the forecast is the one to read.

Oulanka, and why a Ruka trip can run long

Ruka.fi describes Oulanka National Park as sitting in the borderland between Kuusamo and Salla, built around the Oulanka river’s rapids and gorges, with Karhunkierros described on the resort’s own site as “Finland’s best known hiking trail.”

Two sources we could reach disagree on its size and founding year. One puts it at 270 km², founded in 1956; the resort’s own page says 290 km², founded in 1965. The park authority’s own pages need a browser to render and would not open for us, so neither figure is confirmed here. Either way, the trail network is open all year, winter included, and it makes a different kind of day from the resort’s own slopes, which is the main reason a Ruka trip can run longer than a ski week.

Landing at Kuusamo, and the bus you must book

Kuusamo Airport is Ruka’s own airport, and Finavia puts the drive to the resort at about 30 minutes. For winter 2026 to 2027, Ruka.fi lists year-round Finnair flights from Helsinki plus nine direct winter flights from eight European cities: Berlin, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Hamburg, London, Manchester, Riga and Zürich. Finavia also notes regular bus connections from the airport to Ruka and to Salla National Park.

The airport bus is the part to sort out before you fly. A Pre-Booked Airport Bus meets scheduled flights and serves Ruka village, Ruka Valley and the Spa Hotel Kuusamon Tropiikki; it has to be booked at least 24 hours ahead, up to 60 days in advance. Its operator, Rukan Taksipalvelu, publishes a one-way fare from Ruka village to the airport of 15.90 EUR for an adult and 8.90 EUR for a child aged 4 to 11 on Finnair flights. In winter, a SkiBus (line 3) also connects the village to Kuusamo’s centre; Ruka’s own site was still showing the previous winter’s calendar when we checked, so confirm the current dates with Matkahuolto before you plan around it.

In the village itself, everything sits around the pedestrian centre and its underground car park, so once you arrive a car is not essential for skiing alone.

Skiing, flights and the neighbours

For the slopes themselves, and how Ruka compares with the resorts inside Lapland, see skiing in Lapland. For getting there, flights to Lapland covers the winter routes into Kuusamo and car hire and transport covers the rest. Salla is the quiet Lapland neighbour on the other side of Oulanka, and where to stay compares the kinds of room.

Who this is not for

Skip Ruka as a base if the line on the map matters to you. Kuusamo is in North Ostrobothnia, not the Lapland region, whatever the resort’s own marketing says. Skip it too if you want a small, quiet village. This is one of Finland’s biggest ski resorts, built around an underground car park, which Wikipedia puts at 320 vehicles. And the Northern Lights are a weaker draw here than further north. The Finnish Meteorological Institute puts the odds on a dark, clear night at roughly 25% around Kuusamo, against roughly 50% at Levi, Ylläs and Saariselkä.
