Finnish Lapland or Swedish Lapland: which one?
Choose Finnish Lapland for more direct flights from the UK and a choice of bases from a city to a ski resort. Choose Swedish Lapland for Kiruna and the village of Jukkasjärvi, home of the original Icehotel, and Abisko, which Swedish Lapland’s own tourism board places inside the aurora oval. Kiruna’s tourism site puts its polar night at about 28 days with no sunrise, and our own day-by-day sunrise check gives 22 for 2026 to 2027. Either way it is longer than the short day Rovaniemi still gets on 21 December.
The two in one table
Both sit deep inside the Arctic and sell the same winter trip, in very different shapes: on the Finnish side a city with fell resorts scattered out behind it, on the Swedish side a small mining town with the original Icehotel down the road.

| Measure | Finnish Lapland | Swedish Lapland |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Rovaniemi, the capital of Finnish Lapland, on the Arctic Circle, plus fell resorts such as Levi and Ylläs further north | Kiruna and the village of Jukkasjärvi, home of the original Icehotel; Abisko, which Swedish Lapland’s tourism board places inside the aurora oval |
| Getting there | Rovaniemi Airport, 10 km from the centre, with direct flights from several UK airports in winter | Kiruna Airport, about 9 km from Kiruna, with a shuttle on to Abisko; Swedavia’s own page names Stockholm as its direct destination, and we could not confirm a direct UK route |
| Darkness around the shortest day | The sun still rises: about 2 hours 15 minutes of daylight in Rovaniemi on 21 December | True polar night: Kiruna’s own tourism site puts it at about 28 days with no sunrise, running into early January. Our own day-by-day sunrise check gives 22 days for 2026 to 2027, from 11 December to 1 January |
| Snow and temperature | Median snow depth 28 cm on 15 December, average daily low -10.6 °C in December, at Rovaniemi’s airport station (1991 to 2020) | Monthly mean -9.4 °C in December at Kiruna Flygplats (SMHI, 1991 to 2020). That is a monthly mean, not a daily low; Rovaniemi’s December monthly mean is -7.7 °C. SMHI’s normals carry no snow depth, so there is none to set beside Rovaniemi’s |
| Crowds | Visit Rovaniemi estimated 60,000 to 80,000 travellers in Rovaniemi in December 2023 alone | We found no published visitor count for the Kiruna area to set beside that |
| Price band | Rovaniemi’s paid attractions publish a flat price: Arktikum from 22 EUR, SantaPark from 42 EUR | Icehotel and the Aurora Sky Station both price at booking; neither showed us a SEK figure we could read directly, so we do not quote one |
| When the aurora attraction runs | Tours run through the season; no single venue sets the dates | Abisko’s Aurora Sky Station runs its Night Visit from 19 October 2026 to 27 March 2027, 20:30 to no later than 01:00, on its own site |
| If the weather cancels a tour | Arktikum’s museum and Santa Claus Village’s shops and cafés, indoors and a bus ride from central Rovaniemi | Icehotel’s own indoor list: the Icebar, its Art & Design exhibition, a sauna ritual and an ice sculpting class |
| Who it is not for | Anyone set on sleeping inside a rebuilt-every-year ice hotel: Jukkasjärvi’s is the original | Anyone counting on a direct flight from a UK regional airport, or wanting a choice of bases from a city to a ski resort |
Two currencies, and a region larger than this page
The price row does not line up, and that is deliberate. Finland prices in EUR, Sweden in SEK, and this page converts neither into the other. Rovaniemi’s museum and SantaPark publish a flat entry price on their own sites. Icehotel and the Aurora Sky Station both price through booking systems that name a figure only after you have chosen dates, and neither gave us one we could read and quote. That is a gap in what we could check, and it says nothing about which country is dearer.
“Swedish Lapland” also means far more than the corner this page weighs. The Swedish Lapland Visitors Board describes its region as running “from the mountains to the sea”, which takes in the coastal city of Luleå and communities well south of Kiruna. We compare the Kiruna, Jukkasjärvi and Abisko corner alone, because that is the part people have in mind when they set Sweden against Finland for a Northern Lights trip.
Sweden is in the EU like Finland, but it kept the krona when Finland took the euro, so budget in SEK once you are there. Your UK card should behave as it does anywhere else in the EU, subject to whatever fee your own bank charges.
When the answer flips
- Sweden, if sleeping inside an ice hotel is the point of the trip. Jukkasjärvi’s Icehotel is the original, rebuilt from ice and snow each winter.
- Finland, if a direct flight from a UK regional airport matters most. Our flights to Lapland guide covers the routes we could confirm, and Kiruna’s own airport page names only Stockholm as a direct destination.
- Sweden, if the darkest possible sky is what you are chasing, on the figures we have. Kiruna’s polar night, about 28 days by its tourist board and 22 by our own sunrise check, runs longer than the short day Rovaniemi keeps even at the solstice. Kiruna sets out both counts and SMHI’s temperature normals. Read our Northern Lights guide for what darkness alone does and does not buy you.
- Finland, if you want a choice of bases in one country, from a city to a ski resort. Rovaniemi, Levi and Ylläs sit within a few hours of each other. This page weighs Sweden’s Kiruna corner only, never the wider region.

Who this is not for
Neither suits a trip built only around the aurora on a fixed date: cloud is the usual reason people see nothing, in Sweden as in Finland. This page compares only the Kiruna and Abisko corner of Swedish Lapland, not the coastal towns further south that Swedish Lapland’s own tourism board also covers, and Swedish Lapland has no standalone page on this site.
