Where to stay in Tromsø: four areas, not a hotel list
Stay in the centre unless something specific pulls you out of it: Visit Tromsø calls its centre a good size for exploring on foot, most of the town’s hotels and guesthouses stand in or beside it, and the airport is about 5 km out. We list areas rather than hotels because no Tromsø property we could reach publishes a nightly rate on its own site.

Why this page lists areas and not hotels
An area is here only if a source we opened ourselves says where it stands in relation to the centre and, where anyone publishes it, how you travel between the two and what that costs. Three of the four rows below carry a checked distance or a walking time. The fourth, Kvaløya, carries an operator’s own phrase and nothing more, and its row says so.
Distances are an odd basis for an accommodation page, but they were what we had. We tried seven property addresses on 19 September 2026 and found no published nightly rate at any of them, so a hotel list built the way we built Rovaniemi’s would have been empty. The last section lists what each attempt returned.
Norway is no different in this. Five of the six properties on our Rovaniemi accommodation list publish no nightly rate either. There, though, we had six named places worth listing anyway; here the rate was the only thing we could have checked.
The four areas, and what it costs to leave each one

| Area | What it is | Getting to the centre | Who it does not suit |
|---|---|---|---|
| The centre | The walkable middle of the island town, where most of the hotels and guesthouses are | You are already in it. The airport is about 5 km away, 20 minutes by the airport bus | Anyone who came to sleep beside the huskies, which are out on Kvaløya |
| Tromsdalen | The mainland side, across the Tromsø bridge. The Arctic Cathedral is here, and so is the foot of the cable car | About 20 minutes on foot across the bridge, or buses 20, 24, 26 and 28 | Anyone expecting the cable car on the doorstep: from the centre that walk is about 45 minutes, and the cable car has no parking at all |
| The rest of Tromsøya | The island beyond the walkable centre, where the Arctic Museum of Norway sits at the southern end | A bus. The museum end is about 2.5 km out, which its own site treats as a ride and not a walk | Anyone planning to walk everywhere, and anyone booking on the assumption that the island and the centre are the same thing |
| Kvaløya | The island west of Tromsøya, where the husky and wilderness places are. Visit Tromsø treats Kvaløya and Sommarøy as an area of its own with its own accommodation | Not published by anything we opened. The wilderness centre there calls itself just outside the city and keeps a town office at Storgata 61 | Anyone without a car or a transfer arranged by whoever you are staying with |
We default to the centre because Visit Tromsø calls it a good size for exploring on foot, and two other sources bear that out. The Polar Museum, at the north end of the centre, says it is within walking distance of most of the town’s hotels and places to stay. And the airport bus’s own stop list names Moxy, Polaria, Storgata, Prostneset bus terminal, Scandic Ishavshotel and The Dock Hotel by Scandic, the same cluster of hotels seen from the bus route.
Tromsdalen is the only other area where the walk is short enough to change the calculation. Twenty minutes over the bridge puts you in the centre, and the same twenty minutes puts a centre-based visitor at the cathedral, so on distance the two sides are an even choice. On everything else, price included, we have nothing that separates them.
Fares, and the app that sells them
Buses are how you cross between the areas above. From 1 February 2026 a single adult fare within one zone is 50 NOK, an off-peak single is 30 NOK, and a child of 6 to 17 or a senior of 67 and over pays 25 NOK. A 24-hour ticket is 140 NOK for an adult and 70 NOK for a child or a senior. Cash is not accepted on board at all, and Visit Tromsø’s own advice is to plan the journey and buy the ticket through the Svipper app.
The airport is its own case. The express bus costs an adult 125 NOK single or 200 NOK return, and a child of 4 to 15 years 80 NOK or 130 NOK, for a ride of about 20 minutes. City bus routes 40 and 42 stop at the airport as well, and the town fares above are lower than the express bus charges.
The bridge is shut to cars until 1 November 2026
From 17 August to 1 November 2026 the Tromsø bridge is closed to ordinary vehicle traffic. Buses use the Tromsøysund tunnel between 17:00 and 07:00, and anyone on foot or on a bike can cross the bridge at any time.
Note the end date as well as the start. The closure ends on 1 November 2026, before the winter season this site mostly covers, so it is no reason to avoid Tromsdalen in January. Anyone travelling in October should check the current arrangement.
If you do stay out of town and drive, Visit Tromsø says studded tyres are mandatory from October to May because of ice on the roads; check the rule with your hire company, which fits the tyres. Visit Tromsø tells anyone unused to Arctic driving to slow down or use the buses, and we would take the second half of that advice.

What we left out, and why
We found no nightly rate to print. Of the seven addresses we tried on 19 September 2026, three served a page with no rate on it: entertromso.no, the Clarion Hotel The Edge page on strawberry.no, and tromsocamping.no, which builds its content in the browser, so a price may well exist there that a fetch cannot see. One timed out, the Scandic Ishavshotel page on scandichotels.com. One returned a 403 and refused us, the Radisson Blu Tromsø page. Two returned 404s on addresses we had guessed at, for Thon Hotel Tromsø and Smarthotel Tromsø, which means our guesses were wrong and says nothing about those two hotels.
We have no opinion on any property in Tromsø. The hotels named above appear because a bus timetable and a museum’s directions named them first. That puts them on the map and says nothing about whether they are any good.
Three more things people ask about are missing. Tromsdalen is often said to be cheaper than the centre, but with no rate for either side we cannot confirm it. Step-free access at the properties is not researched; the one accessibility fact we hold is on the things to do page, where the cable car has suspended wheelchair access during its rebuild. And no source we opened says how far ahead to book or how prices move between November and March, so we give no booking-window rule.
If you use Visit Tromsø’s own accommodation listings, know that we cannot tell whether its entries are paid placements. We used the list only to establish that Kvaløya counts as a separate area and took no property from it, so it affects nothing above; find out before you rely on it.
Who this is not for
Anyone who wants a hotel named, ranked or recommended. We opened no reviews, used no booking site and have stayed nowhere in Tromsø. Nor does this page say which areas are quiet, dear or pleasant after dark, because no source we opened says so, and how a place feels is not something to judge from a desk.
