Kilpisjärvi: is it the right base for you?
Kilpisjärvi is a small village in Enontekiö municipality, under the distinctive tabletop fell Saana, at the far northwestern tip of Finland where the country narrows to a strip between Norway and Sweden. Hikers and aurora watchers who want the most remote, highest-altitude corner of Finnish Lapland are repaid for the journey; anyone whose time or budget will not stretch to a long one is not.

Kilpisjärvi on paper
Read the row about getting there first. It rules more trips out than anything else here.
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What it is | A village in Enontekiö municipality on the shore of Lake Kilpisjärvi, under the tabletop fell Saana, where Finland narrows to a strip between Norway and Sweden |
| Airport | Enontekiö Airport, near Hetta, run by the municipality since 14 July 2021; a UK operator has flown direct winter charters there in past seasons |
| Getting there overland | Eskelisen Lapin Linjat has run an Arctic Route bus linking Rovaniemi, Kilpisjärvi and Tromsø (Norway); in the 2023-24 season it ran daily with a journey of about 10.5 hours. We could not confirm whether it still runs for 2026-27 |
| Nights it earns | Two to three, in our view, built around Saana and the Malla area |
| Snow | Typical (median) depth at the Kilpisjärvi kyläkeskus station: 57 cm on 15 January, 81 cm on 15 February, 93 cm on 15 March (1991 to 2020) |
| Darkness | Polar night from about 1 December 2026 to 12 January 2027, the longest of any place covered on this site |
| Northern Lights season | Dark, clear nights from around late August to early April |
How long to stay under Saana
Two nights covers the marked trail up Saana and a look at the Malla area from the visitor centre. A third takes you further into Malla Strict Nature Reserve, towards the Three-Country Cairn where Finland, Norway and Sweden meet, or it simply holds an evening spare for the aurora. Nobody can promise that evening will deliver. The sky has to be dark and clear and the sun has to be active, all at once, and neither an operator nor an extra night can arrange that.
The village stands at about 69.05°N, further north than Inari, Saariselkä or Rovaniemi, in the “arm” of Finland that reaches between Norway and Sweden. Enontekiö municipality, which contains it, holds more than 60% of all the fells in Finland and every peak over 1,000 m. Saana, the tabletop fell standing directly over the village, is one of them.
The deepest snow and the longest dark
Its own weather station, Kilpisjärvi kyläkeskus (village centre), sits at 480 m elevation, higher than any station used elsewhere on this site, and it holds the longest local climate record. Below are its average daily low and high for 1991 to 2020, with the typical (median) snow depth on the 15th.
| Month | Average daily low | Average daily high | Median snow depth on the 15th |
|---|---|---|---|
| November | -10.0 °C | -3.2 °C | 16 cm |
| December | -14.7 °C | -5.8 °C | 34 cm |
| January | -17.3 °C | -7.7 °C | 57 cm |
| February | -17.4 °C | -7.9 °C | 81 cm |
| March | -14.1 °C | -4.2 °C | 93 cm |
| April | -8.3 °C | 0.9 °C | 89 cm |
That March median of 93 cm is the deepest snow of any place covered on this site, and April still holds nearly as much.
The darkness matches the snow. On moisio.fi’s sunrise and sunset calculator the sun last rose on 30 November 2026 and was not due back above the horizon until 12 January 2027, a polar night of about six weeks, longer than Ivalo or Inari to the east. Saana, Malla and the border cairn
Saana is why most people come. The tabletop fell stands over the village, and a marked trail climbs it from near the Malla car park. Hiking sites quote a summit height and a trail length freely, but neither figure appears on any Metsähallitus or Enontekiö Arctic Lapland page we could open, so you will not find either number here.
Three more things are within reach of the village.
- Malla Strict Nature Reserve. Summer access is restricted to the marked trail, which runs about 11 km through the reserve towards the Three-Country Cairn, the point where Finland, Norway and Sweden meet. Camping and leaving the trail are forbidden everywhere in the reserve except at the Kuohkimajärvi hut yard.
- The Three-Country Cairn (Treriksröset). Reachable on foot from the village, or in summer by a shorter combination of boat and a short walk. The boat’s current timetable and fare are not published on any operator page we found.
- Käsivarsi Wilderness Area, Finland’s arm-shaped northwestern corner, holding most of the country’s highest fells, including those near Halti close to the Norwegian border.
Dark skies do the rest. There is next to no light pollution here, and between the latitude and the elevation this has become a favoured spot for aurora photography; our Northern Lights guide sets out how the aurora works and why no operator and no location can promise it.
A bed in the village
There is no Kilpisjärvi accommodation listing here, because we have no selection rule we could state for one yet. Until that changes, our general where to stay in Lapland page compares the kinds of stay available across the region.
The journey in, by air and by road
This is the most remote place covered on this site, and whichever way you come, it takes planning.
By air, the nearest airport is Enontekiö, near the village of Hetta, which the airport company Finavia transferred to the municipality of Enontekiö on 14 July 2021. UK operator Transun says its “direct charter flights all land at the very small Enontekio Airport, which has only one runway,” and such flights have run in past winters. For winter 2026 to 2027, though, neither the airport’s own site nor the operator’s names an airline, a route or a schedule. Hetta is not the end of it either: Kilpisjärvi is a further drive from there.
The overland alternative is Eskelisen Lapin Linjat’s Arctic Route, a bus linking Rovaniemi, Kilpisjärvi and Tromsø in Norway. In the 2023 to 2024 season the operator’s own page had it running daily from 1 December 2023 to 13 March 2024, an end-to-end journey of about 10.5 hours, on coaches with Wi-Fi, a toilet and English-speaking drivers. That page has since gone offline, and nothing we can open says whether the route runs at all for winter 2026 to 2027, or on what timetable. The route settles one question, at least. Tromsø, on the Norwegian coast, is closer to Kilpisjärvi than Rovaniemi is, and our Tromsø vs Rovaniemi comparison covers the difference between the two as a base.
Who this is not for
Skip Kilpisjärvi if you cannot spend most of a day travelling to reach it, by road or by a long-haul bus route, or if you need daylight in early winter. Its polar night runs from about 1 December 2026 to 12 January 2027, longer than anywhere else covered on this site, and neither Enontekiö airport nor Kilpisjärvi’s own village has a short, reliable link to a major hub.
