Lofoten Islands in winter, as far as we checked
The Lofoten Islands are a chain of mountain islands off the coast of northern Norway at about 68 degrees north, reached from Oslo by way of Evenes or Bodø. At Svolvær the sun does not rise from 7 December 2026 to 5 January 2027, the normal winter month averages close to 0 °C, and Visit Lofoten gives the aurora season as late August to April. This page checks less than our Finnish ones, and says where.

| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What it is | A long, narrow archipelago off the coast of northern Norway, at about 68 degrees north on Visit Lofoten’s figure, with about 25,000 people. The E10 runs 163 km along it, from Fiskebøl to Å |
| Airports | Svolvær and Leknes on the islands, served from Bodø and Tromsø. Harstad/Narvik airport at Evenes is 170 km from Svolvær |
| From the UK | No direct route found. Visit Lofoten lists daily flights from Oslo to Bodø and to Evenes |
| Nights it earns | Blank. The transfer from Evenes alone takes about two and a half hours by car, and we have no checked chain of distances and opening seasons to build a number on |
| No sunrise | 7 December 2026 to 5 January 2027, at Svolvær |
| Winter temperature | Normal monthly means at Svolvær airport, 1991 to 2020: 1.5 °C in December, 0.3 in January, -0.4 in February, 0.3 in March |
| Snow | Blank as a number. Visit Lofoten says reliable snow is most likely from January to March |
| Northern Lights season | Late August to April, on Visit Lofoten’s pages |
What we checked in Lofoten, and what we left alone
Nobody on this site has been to Lofoten, and our authority is Finnish Lapland. For this page we opened the tourist board, Visit Lofoten; Avinor, which runs the airports; MET Norway’s climate normals, through Yr, which MET Norway runs with NRK; Statens vegvesen, the Norwegian roads authority; and moisio.fi, the same sunrise calculator our Finnish pages use. Each was read once, in September 2026.
Two of those are solid. The daylight is arithmetic for Svolvær’s position. The temperatures are normals for 1991 to 2020, and Yr’s data names the period, which it did not for Tromsø. Most of the rest is Visit Lofoten describing its own islands, with Avinor for the flights and Statens vegvesen for the road rules, and the tourist board’s account has not been set against a second source.
We have no price for a bed, a car or a tour, and no view on any operator: licensing, insurance, safety and animal welfare are all unchecked. There is no snow-depth figure, for the same reason as on our Tromsø page: Norway publishes observed depth, and Finland’s median is a different kind of number.
Polar night in Lofoten, and how dark it gets
At Svolvær the sun last rises on 6 December 2026, for 42 minutes. From 7 December 2026 to 5 January 2027 it does not rise at all, and on 6 January 2027 it is back for 48 minutes. Visit Lofoten gives the same window, around 7 December to 5 January, and calls the period mørketiden.
It is not a black month. On 21 December moisio.fi gives Svolvær 5 hours 11 minutes of twilight, and Visit Lofoten describes two to four hours around the solstice when the sky brightens, with a deep blue light. Tromsø, further north, goes without sunrise for longer.

The light comes back fast. Svolvær has 3 hours 58 minutes of daylight on 21 November, 4 hours 1 minute on 21 January, 8 hours 38 minutes on 21 February and 12 hours 23 minutes on 21 March.
Lofoten weather in winter: mild, wet and quick to change
The islands sit on the open coast, and Visit Lofoten says the Gulf Stream moderates the climate a great deal. Its own figures are daytime temperatures of about −5 to 5 °C, dropping to about −5 to −10 °C in clear, cold spells.
The normals agree. At Svolvær airport no winter month averages below −0.4 °C, and Leknes airport, to the west, is within half a degree of it every month. Rovaniemi airport averages −10.3 °C in January. The same Leknes normals show how wet the coast is: 274 mm of precipitation in a normal December.
Source: MET Norway normals 1991 to 2020 via Yr (Svolvær airport); Finnish Meteorological Institute, 1991 to 2020 (Rovaniemi airport). Checked 25 September 2026.
| Month | Svolvær airport | Leknes airport | Leknes precipitation | Rovaniemi airport |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| November | 3.3 °C | 2.8 °C | 187 mm | -4.4 °C |
| December | 1.5 °C | 1.1 °C | 274 mm | -7.7 °C |
| January | 0.3 °C | 0.1 °C | 201 mm | -10.3 °C |
| February | -0.4 °C | -0.5 °C | 179 mm | -10.3 °C |
| March | 0.3 °C | 0.1 °C | 167 mm | -5.6 °C |
| April | 2.7 °C | 2.7 °C | 86 mm | 0.1 °C |
Mild air around freezing and a lot of precipitation make for roads that change by the hour, which is the next section. For the week you travel, Yr’s forecast for Svolvær comes from the same institute as these normals.
The Northern Lights over Lofoten
Visit Lofoten places the islands at 67 and 68 degrees north, inside the auroral oval, and gives the season as late August to mid April on its Northern Lights page and late August to early April on its winter page. It says the lights usually first appear around 20:00 to 21:00 and fade a little after midnight, and it suggests the sandy beaches on the thinly populated north coast, Uttakleiv, Haukland and Vik among them, as places to start. Its advice on the Kp index is not to worry about it and to find clear skies. That fits what we say on how to read a Northern Lights forecast.
Clear skies are the hard part on a coast this wet, and we found no count of clear winter nights for Lofoten. Visit Lofoten itself talks of luck, chance and patience. Tromsø sits under the same oval further north, with a city and a larger airport; Finland or Norway for the Northern Lights weighs the coast against inland Lapland, where a guide can drive away from cloud. The coastal ships call at Stamsund and Svolvær, going north and again coming south, and a Northern Lights cruise or Lapland sets out what that trip promises.
How to get to the Lofoten Islands from the UK
We found no direct flight from the UK. Visit Lofoten’s list of direct European routes into Evenes names none from Britain, and Avinor’s own flight data for the week from 25 September 2026 showed departures from Evenes to Oslo, Bodø, Tromsø, Bergen and a handful of others, Frankfurt and Copenhagen among them, none to a British airport. Svolvær and Leknes flights went only to Bodø and Tromsø. That is an autumn week, and the winter timetable is unchecked here. From Oslo, Visit Lofoten describes these onward routes.
| Route | What it involves |
|---|---|
| Oslo to Evenes, then by road | Norwegian flies Oslo to Harstad/Narvik daily. Svolvær is 170 km on, about two and a half hours by car, longer in winter. Avis, Budget, Hertz, Europcar, Enterprise and Sixt hire cars at the airport; Avinor sends you to Reis Nordland for the airport bus to Lofoten, its times and fares |
| Oslo to Bodø, then Widerøe | Several Widerøe flights a day from Bodø to Svolvær and Leknes |
| Oslo to Bodø, then the ferry | The car ferry to Moskenes takes about 3.5 hours, run by Torghatten Nord. The only winter timetable we found on its site was for 2024-25, so check the current one |
Driving the E10 in winter
Visit Lofoten is direct about the road. The E10 is the islands’ one main artery, and in a single day it can be dry, black-iced, snow-packed or slushy. Exposed points such as the Gimsøy bridge close in strong winds, and the tourist board recommends public transport, especially at first. The route includes an undersea tunnel, the Nappstraum tunnel, 1,776 m long.
If you do drive, the Norwegian rules are Statens vegvesen’s. From 1 November to the first Sunday after Easter Monday, tyres need at least 3 mm of tread. In Nordland, where Lofoten is, studded tyres are allowed from 16 October to 30 April. Summer tyres cannot be used on winter roads, and the driver is responsible for grip. Statens vegvesen publishes road messages and closures on its traffic information pages.
Haukland, Reine and the summer searches
Much of what people search for about Lofoten is summer: Haukland beach, the village of Reine, the midnight sun, which Visit Lofoten dates from 28 May to 14 July. This site plans winter trips and has checked none of the summer. Haukland does turn up in winter too, on Visit Lofoten’s list of north-coast beaches to watch the aurora from.
Who this is not for
Anyone who wants a snow-sure winter base: Visit Lofoten says reliable snow is most likely only from January to March, and the normal monthly mean at Svolvær airport sits just above or below freezing all winter. Drivers not used to ice, unless they are happy to use buses and ferries instead. And anyone choosing on hotel prices or on a tour operator, because we checked neither in Lofoten.
