Lapland itinerary: five days from Rovaniemi

How many days you need in Lapland

Four nights, which is five days on the calendar. Arrival and departure each take most of a day, so four nights leaves three full days in between, and four evenings in the dark for the Northern Lights. Three nights works if you fly in early and accept two aurora attempts instead of three or four. Our Rovaniemi guide says the same: three nights covers Santa Claus Village, a morning at Arktikum and one paid activity, and the fourth is your margin for cloud.

The nights matter more than the base. The Finnish Meteorological Institute puts the chance of an aurora on a dark, cloudless night at roughly 50% at the Lapland ski resorts and roughly 25% around Oulu and Kuusamo, and gives no figure for Rovaniemi, which lies between them. The sky has to clear first, and nobody can book that. More nights is the only thing that improves your odds without changing where you go. The full mechanism is in our Northern Lights guide.

The shape of the five days

The plan below is built for a winter trip, December to March, based in Rovaniemi and without a car. It has three rules.

• One paid activity per day, in the light, because the light is short. On 21 December 2026 the sun is above the horizon in Rovaniemi for about 2 hours 15 minutes; by 15 February it is about 8 hours.
• The evenings stay free. The Finnish Meteorological Institute says displays are most typical between about 21:00 and 01:00 local time, so a busy evening costs you an aurora attempt.
• Day four is loose. A husky tour cancelled for cold, or a cloudy night on your aurora tour, moves there. Bearhill Husky cancels its tours below -35 °C, and Lapland Safaris’ booking terms name weather among the reasons it may not run a tour.

Where to sleep is in where to stay in Rovaniemi: the walkable centre suits this plan best, because the local buses run through it and the tours below pick up from it.

A 5 day Lapland itinerary, day by day

Day 1: arrive, and look up

Rovaniemi Airport is 10 km from the centre. The Airport Express bus meets arriving flights and runs to the centre by way of Santa Claus Village; its summer fare was 8 EUR one way and its winter fare was still not published when we checked on 24 September 2026. Check in, walk the centre, eat early. If the night is clear, try for the aurora on your own: Visit Rovaniemi points to watching spots a short walk from the centre. Book nothing for this evening, because a late flight would waste it.

Day 2: Santa Claus Village and the Arctic Circle

Take local bus 8 from the centre, about 30 minutes, 3.60 EUR a single in cash or by contactless card. Entry to Santa Claus Village is free and you can meet Santa every day of the year, free of charge; the photographs are what cost. The Reindeer Path ride there, 400 m and about 6 minutes, costs from 30 EUR and needs no booking. Half a day covers it, in our view, and our Santa Claus Village page says what to skip. In the evening, a guided Northern Lights tour. Lapland Welcome’s Rovaniemi tour leaves at 21:00, Monday to Saturday, for 4 to 5 hours, from 129 EUR an adult. If the aurora does not appear, it lets you join again free within two weeks, subject to availability. Booking it for day two leaves two nights to use that.

Day 3: Arktikum, then the dogs

Arktikum, the science centre and museum on northern nature, cultures and history, opens daily from 10:00 to 18:00 between 1 December 2026 and 28 February 2027, closed on 24 December; an adult ticket is 22 EUR. In the afternoon, a husky safari: Lapland Safaris’ two-hour “Afternoon with huskies” costs from 98 EUR, and Bearhill Husky’s guided Running with the Pack, 2 hours 15 minutes and 5 km on the sled, costs 164 EUR an adult, 169 EUR from 30 November 2026 to 10 January 2027, with transfers from the centre or Santa Claus Village. The evening is free: your second aurora attempt.

Day 4: the loose day

Anything cancelled earlier moves here. If nothing was, choose one: a snowmobile safari (Lapland Safaris runs 1 hour from 97 EUR up to 6 hours from 264 EUR; the driver must be 18 with a licence valid in Finland), a longer reindeer safari (3 hours at Taava, near Rovaniemi, from 160 EUR), or SantaPark, open 31 October 2026 to 23 January 2027, from 42 EUR an adult. The evening is your third attempt, or the repeat of your tour.

Day 5: leave

What to book first, and what can wait

Book the flights first, because they fix the nights. Several UK routes fly only twice a week, as our cost guide notes, and flights to Lapland has the current routes. Then the room: Rovaniemi’s hotel rooms were 93.5% full on average in December 2025 and 92.5% in February 2026, on Statistics Finland’s figures. Then the husky tour, which runs at fixed times and which Bearhill Husky charges in full if you cancel 7 days or less before.

Santa Claus Village, the short reindeer rides there and Arktikum can wait until you arrive. Book the aurora tour ahead, for the second night, so that a repeat still fits into the trip.

What five days costs per person

The band below covers four nights and the plan above, for one adult sharing a double room. It excludes international flights, which change daily, and meals, for which we found no published price level for Lapland. The room figure is Statistics Finland’s average price per occupied hotel room in Rovaniemi for that month, including VAT, halved for two people sharing. The lower activity choices come to about 400 EUR: the 30 EUR reindeer ride, Lapland Welcome’s 129 EUR aurora tour, Arktikum at 22 EUR, the 98 EUR husky afternoon, a one-hour snowmobile safari at 97 EUR, and about 23 EUR of airport and local buses. The higher ones come to about 930 EUR: Bearhill Husky’s 3-hour Call of the Wild with 1.5 hours driving your own sled at 249 EUR, the 169 EUR small-group photography aurora tour, the 6-hour snowmobile safari at 264 EUR, the 160 EUR reindeer safari, SantaPark, Arktikum and the buses. A child costs less on most of these: 64 EUR on the aurora tour, 10 EUR at Arktikum.

An average hides the week you pick. The run-up to Christmas is not separated out in a monthly figure, and “from” prices are the lowest-priced date. Treat the band as a floor you can check, not a quote.

Four days, or a week

For four days, three nights, drop day four. You lose the margin for weather and one aurora evening, and the room costs one night less: about 162 EUR a person in February on the same averages.

For a week, keep the five days and add. From Rovaniemi, Ranua Wildlife Park is 80 km away; Lapland Safaris runs a winter excursion there from 149 EUR, 4.5 hours. Or split the week, as our Rovaniemi guide suggests: three nights here, then a resort further north, where the dark-sky odds are the ones the Finnish Meteorological Institute’s 50% figure describes. With young children, and without a car

With young children, keep to two activities a day at most, as our families page advises, and move the aurora tour late in the trip or drop it: Lapland Welcome takes children from 4, and the tour does not return until after midnight. No child under 2 can join a husky or snowmobile safari on Lapland Safaris’ terms. SantaPark, from 37 EUR for a child aged 3 to 12, is the easy swap for day four.

Without a car, this plan already works. Local bus 8 runs to Santa Claus Village from the centre, but not late: the last weekday bus back leaves the Arctic Circle at 19:35, and at weekends at 18:05, with the first weekend bus out leaving the railway station only at 11:15.
