What a Lapland trip costs

The month, the activities, the flights

Three things set the price of a Lapland trip, and they matter in that order. The room is a fourth, but its price only follows the month, so it is not really a separate decision.

The month, above all December

A hotel room in Lapland averaged about 324 EUR a night in December 2025, twice the average for Finland as a whole that month, and about 103 EUR in July 2026. In December 2025, 79 per cent of Lapland’s hotel rooms were taken, against 42 per cent in November and 80 per cent in February 2026 (Statistics Finland). UK visitors are a large part of that demand: they spent about 211,000 nights in Lapland in December 2025, against about 26,000 in November and 41,000 in January 2026 (Statistics Finland).

The figures are monthly averages, so they cannot tell you whether the weeks before Christmas cost more than the days after it. One Rovaniemi kennel sets its peak-season rate from 30 November 2026 to 10 January 2027, 5 EUR above its regular adult price (the kennel’s price list).

Activities, more than the room

A room is priced per room. Activities are priced per person, so the bigger your party, the more of the budget they take. On one kennel’s published winter prices, a 45-minute self-drive husky ride for two adults and two children aged 4 to 11 costs 648 EUR, or 668 EUR in its peak season (the kennel’s price list). That is about two nights of an average December hotel room, for one activity.

Flights from the UK

We quote no fares here, because they change daily. What moves them is demand, which peaks in December, and choice. In winter 2025-2026, Finavia listed scheduled flights to Rovaniemi from ten UK airports, to Kittilä from London Gatwick and Manchester, and to Ivalo from London Gatwick, with charter flights running on top and not listed (Finavia). The three new UK routes Finavia announced in June 2026 for winter 2026-2027 each fly twice a week (Finavia), so the flight days can fix how many nights you pay for. What a room costs, and what everything else costs

The first table follows a hotel room through the year.

Three years of these figures, with Rovaniemi’s own hotels beside Lapland’s, are free to download as lapland-room-prices.csv, and every activity price on this site is in lapland-activity-prices.csv. Both are under CC BY 4.0, and using our figures says how to cite them.

The second table lists prices we saw on 17 September 2026. “From” prices are the lowest rate an operator lists, usually for the lowest-priced date or age group.

Is Lapland expensive?

Finland is. In 2025, prices for restaurants and accommodation in Finland were about 22 per cent above the EU average, food in shops about 8 per cent above, and alcoholic drinks about twice the EU average (Eurostat). Lapland adds to that for most of the year: from September to April, its hotel rooms cost more than the Finnish average in every month of the table. From May to August they cost less.

Eight ways to spend less, and one that dwarfs the rest

If you came here searching for cheap Lapland holidays or Lapland deals, the table above has already told you the answer. It is the month. Everything below it is small change by comparison.

• Meet Santa outside December. Santa Claus Village is open every day of the year and entry is free (Santa Claus Village). Rooms averaged 213 EUR in November 2025 and 261 EUR in January 2026, against 324 EUR in December. Check that the activities you want are running: the two self-drive husky tours priced above start on 30 November 2026.
• Chase the aurora in September or October. Visit Finland dates the season in Lapland from late August (Visit Finland), and rooms averaged 134 EUR and 127 EUR in September and October 2025, about half the February 2026 figure of 263 EUR. Autumn tours listed on Visit Rovaniemi include husky training runs (Visit Rovaniemi) and aurora floating (Visit Rovaniemi); the self-drive husky tours priced above start on 30 November.
• Ski in March or April. Slopes typically stay open until April (Visit Finland), and rooms averaged 231 EUR in March and 147 EUR in April 2026, against 263 EUR in February.
• Choose one animal ride instead of three, and book the longer version of the one your party actually cares about.
• Share the snowmobile. Driving alone costs 60 EUR to 85 more per person on one operator’s prices.
• Buy the multi-day lift ticket. At Levi, six days cost 258 EUR last season, against 348 EUR for six single days.
• Read what the tour already includes. The husky and snowmobile tours we read include outer clothing, so the hire counter may be a queue you can walk past.
• Eat from the shops on some days. Finland’s gap over the EU average is narrower for food bought in a shop than for restaurants and accommodation.

Travel insurance and the GHIC, for UK visitors

Insurance is a line in the budget too, and two official UK sources set out the position. We repeat what they say, checked on 24 September 2026, and add no advice of our own.

The NHS says the UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) lets you get necessary state healthcare in the European Economic Area on the same basis as a resident of that country, which may be free or may mean paying what a local resident would pay. It covers state healthcare that cannot reasonably wait until you are back in the UK, including emergency treatment, visits to A&E, and treatment for long-term or pre-existing conditions. It does not cover being flown back to the UK (medical repatriation) or treatment in a private medical facility. The card is free and lasts up to 5 years, and the NHS warns that unofficial websites may charge a fee to apply.

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) travel advice for Finland says you need a GHIC or an EHIC to get medically necessary state healthcare in Finland, and that neither is an alternative to travel insurance. It lists costs the card does not cover:

• changes to travel and accommodation bookings
• additional standard costs for treatment
• medical repatriation to the UK
• treatment that is ruled non-urgent
• private healthcare and private clinics

The FCDO advises getting appropriate travel insurance, and says it should cover your itinerary, planned activities and expenses in an emergency. The NHS gives the same advice: private travel and medical insurance for the length of your trip. If your plan includes a snowmobile or husky safari, that line about planned activities is the one to hold a policy against. We do not recommend an insurer, and no insurer pays us.

What people get wrong

Setting a package price against a flight and a room. The plan-your-own version still needs activities, transfers and possibly clothing hire, and nearly all of that is priced per person.

Reading a starting price as the price. “From” means the lowest-priced date or age group. Yours may not be it.

Skipping the snowmobile small print. On the operator pages we read, the driver must be 18 or over with a valid driving licence, and carries liability for damage to the machine at a flat 1,000 EUR per person if there is an accident (one operator’s terms).

Paying for an aurora tour as though it were a promise. Some are sold as unlimited passes, from 415 EUR on Visit Rovaniemi (checked 24 September 2026). Visit Finland calls clear skies the single biggest factor, so find out what happens on a cloudy night before you hand over the money.
