Christmas in Lapland: is a Santa trip realistic?

Yes, for most families whose children are old enough to enjoy Santa and to cope with December days of -11 °C to -5 °C. Base yourself in Rovaniemi, where the Santa Claus Village is a short ride from the airport and the town, stay three or four nights, and plan each day to fit about six hours of usable light.

The cold, the dark, the age and the flight days

Three things decide whether a Santa trip works with children: the cold, the dark and the travel days. The fourth is your child’s age, and that one is a judgement only you can make.

The cold. An average December day at Rovaniemi airport has a low of -10.6 °C and a high of -4.9 °C, and on about 15 days the low falls below -10 °C. Further north it is colder. Visit Finland advises dressing children in layers, with wool next to the skin and waterproof, windproof outer layers, and says an all-in-one suit is often easiest for young children. With babies and very young children it advises limiting time outdoors when it is very cold, because cold air can affect their airways, and it warns that water-based creams can raise the risk of frostbite in extreme cold.

The dark. In Rovaniemi the sun is up for just under four hours on 1 December and about two and a quarter hours around 21 December. Civil twilight, when in many cases you need no artificial light outdoors, runs from about 09:15 to 15:15 on 21 December. That is the day you have for sledging, reindeer and Santa. For the month in detail, see Lapland in December.

The day you have with children on 21 December Civil twilight in Rovaniemi runs from about 09:15 to 15:15; Santa’s office stays open well after dark, and the aurora’s usual hours come after bedtime.

The age. There is no official minimum age for any of this that we could find, so here is our view. A child who knows who Santa is, and can tell you when their hands are cold, gets the most from the trip. Under about three, the trip is mostly for you, which can still be worth doing if you plan it around naps and short spells outside.

The travel days. The new direct UK routes Finavia announced for winter 2026 to 2027 run twice a week: Newcastle to Rovaniemi on Wednesdays and Sundays from 25 November 2026, London Gatwick to Rovaniemi on Mondays and Fridays from 4 December 2026, and London Luton and Liverpool to Kittilä, the airport for Levi. Twice-weekly flights fix your trip length: Monday to Friday is four nights. Without a direct flight you connect in Helsinki, which has daily flights to Rovaniemi, or take VR’s overnight train. More in flights to Lapland.

Check every passport in the party against GOV.UK’s entry requirements for Finland. Each must have been issued less than 10 years before you arrive and be valid for at least 3 months after you leave the Schengen area.

Three kinds of Santa trip, and who each suits

A same-day trip

Same-day trips from the UK were still running in December 2023, according to Yle, Finland’s public broadcaster: travellers mainly from Britain and Ireland, many of them families with children, with about six hours on the ground for snowmobiling, sledging, huskies and Santa. Yle also reported that day-trippers had disappeared from Rovaniemi airport and were flying into Kittilä and Enontekiö instead, so a day trip is unlikely to include the Santa Claus Village. Which airports the day trips use for Christmas 2026 is not something we could confirm, so ask before you book. A day trip suits families with school-age children who want snow and Santa without a night away. It is a long day for a small child: the flight Yle described left at seven in the morning.

A short break of two to four nights

This suits most families. Two nights leave one full day; with three or four you can put Santa on one day and snow on another, and move a plan when the weather turns. Give the Santa visit a full day, never your arrival evening.

A longer independent stay

Five nights or more, booked yourself. This suits families who want a slower pace, children of different ages, or several evenings free for the aurora. It costs more in accommodation and takes more planning.

What a Santa package usually includes, and what to check

A UK Santa package bundles the flight, the transfer, the room and a set of activities, and no two bundles hold the same things. Three operators’ own pages for winter 2026 to 2027, read on 25 September 2026, show how far apart they sit. None of them is named here. The questions in the right-hand column work for any package, and we have no arrangement with any operator.

The age rules behind the husky and snowmobile rows are on Lapland with children, and what to wear under a borrowed suit is on what to wear.

Rovaniemi for Santa, Levi for the slopes

Rovaniemi, for the Santa Claus Village

For a first Santa trip, Rovaniemi is the base we would choose, because the transfers are short. The Santa Claus Village sits at the Arctic Circle marker about 8 km north of the town centre, and Finavia puts it about 3 km from Rovaniemi airport. Local bus 8 runs between the centre and the village. There is no entrance fee, and you can meet Santa there every day of the year. His office in the village lists opening hours of 08:00 to 20:00 every day from 30 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, which includes 24 and 25 December. More on the town in our Rovaniemi guide.

Levi, for a ski resort at Christmas

Levi is 15 km from Kittilä airport, which gets new direct UK routes for winter 2026 to 2027. Visit Levi says numerous slopes and lifts are open at Christmas, that grocery stores, souvenir shops and restaurants are open in Christmas week, and that its children’s programme runs every day of the week. Meeting Santa is among the Christmas activities it lists; we have not checked those experiences one by one.

Further north

Around Inari the sun does not rise from early December, and in Utsjoki it does not rise at all in December. That suits an aurora trip better than a first trip with small children.

What to drop

The second Santa. One good visit is enough, and the day you free up can go to the snow.

The afternoon queue. Santa’s office says December is its most popular time and recommends arriving in the morning to get your entry time. You cannot book a visit time at all, except with the paid private pass below.

Late aurora hunts with young children. Displays are most typical between about 21:00 and 01:00, well past bedtime. Look out from where you are staying instead; our Northern Lights guide has the rest.

Long outdoor sessions on the coldest days. Break the day into short spells outside with warm breaks between them.

A suitcase full of winter gear. Visit Finland says you can often rent clothing for children and adults in popular winter destinations.

An unplanned Christmas Day. In Finland the main celebration is Christmas Eve, 24 December, and many shops and offices close over the Christmas public holidays. Check the hours of anything you have planned for 24 to 26 December, and book Christmas dinner ahead, as Visit Levi recommends.

And your own camera at Santa’s office. Cameras and phones are not allowed there. A photographer takes the pictures and buying them is optional.

What a Christmas trip costs a family

Your largest costs are flights on fixed dates, accommodation, and activities priced per person. December accommodation is expensive: in December 2025 a hotel room in Lapland averaged about 324 EUR a night, about twice the average for Finland as a whole, and Statistics Finland’s release for that month named Lapland the most expensive region. Rovaniemi’s own hotels cost more again: about 482 EUR a night on average in December 2025, against about 319 EUR in December 2022, per occupied room with VAT included.

Meeting Santa costs nothing. At his office in the village, as listed on 17 September 2026:

  • Meeting Santa: free
  • Photos and video to download, up to five people: 55 EUR, plus 5 EUR for each extra person
  • A printed A4 photograph: 40 EUR
  • A private visit at a booked time, with photos and video, for one family of up to eight people: 500 EUR

Renting winter clothing, where you can, also saves luggage. For the whole picture, including flights and activities, see what Lapland really costs.

Book it the day your dates are fixed

No official source we found puts a number of months on it, but every figure we have points the same way. Lapland’s hotel rooms were 79% occupied on average in December 2025 and 82% in December 2024, and from 2023 to 2025 Rovaniemi’s hotel rooms were about 95% full on average in December, more than in any other month. In December 2025 more foreign overnight stays in Finland came from the UK than from any other country. Visit Levi says the Christmas weeks are among the first to be booked.

Book accommodation first, then flights, then VR’s night train if you need it (tickets are on sale for dates up to 25 April 2027), then Christmas dinner and activities. The private Santa visit needs a booked time slot too.

Who this is not for

Families travelling mainly for a baby or a child under about three: at that age the trip is mostly for the adults, and Visit Finland advises limiting very young children’s time outdoors when it is very cold. In our view it becomes the child’s trip from about three or four, when they know who Santa is and can tell you they are cold. Also not for anyone who needs a low-cost trip, since in December 2025 Lapland had the highest average hotel room price of any Finnish region, or for anyone who wants long days: around 21 December the sun is up for about two and a quarter hours in Rovaniemi.
