Rovaniemi, Finland: is it the right base for you?

How long to give Rovaniemi

Three nights covers Santa Claus Village, a morning at Arktikum and one paid activity, a husky or reindeer ride say.

What three nights does not give you is a margin for the aurora. You need a dark, cloudless night, and then the aurora itself has to turn up, and nobody can book the weather. The Finnish Meteorological Institute puts the chance of seeing it on a dark, cloudless night at roughly 50% at Lapland ski resorts such as Levi, Ylläs and Saariselkä, and roughly 25% around Oulu and Kuusamo. It gives no figure for Rovaniemi, which lies between those places in latitude. Each extra night is another attempt and not a promise, which is why we suggest four nights over three. Two hundred days of winter

Winter is the long season here. The Finnish Meteorological Institute counts about 200 days of it in Lapland, starting in mid-October. What follows is the average daily low and high at Rovaniemi’s airport weather station for the months most visitors ask about, with the typical (median) snow depth on the 15th.

Averages hide the cold snaps. The lowest reading at the airport station in those 30 years was -38.1 °C, in January 1999. The Apukka station, lower down at 106 m against the airport’s 189 m, averages a January low of -17.0 °C and recorded -47.5 °C. Pack for well below the table.

Light changes faster than temperature does. Around the shortest day there are only about two and a quarter hours between sunrise and sunset, though the sun still rises every day. The things people come for

Most visitors are here for a handful of things, and here is each one with what it costs where we could confirm the price.

Santa Claus Village is free to enter, open every day, and meeting Santa costs nothing. What you pay for is the rides, the photographs and the attractions arranged around him. Our honest look at Santa Claus Village covers what is worth the time.

Two ticketed places are worth knowing the prices of before you go.

• SantaPark, a separate, indoor Christmas theme park in a cavern, open from 31 October 2026 to 23 January 2027, with tickets starting at 42 EUR for adults and 37 EUR for children aged 3 to 12.
• Arktikum, a science centre and museum shared by the Arctic Centre of the University of Lapland and the Regional Museum of Lapland, covering northern nature, cultures and history, with an animation on the aurora. Adults 22 EUR, children aged 7 to 17 10 EUR, a family ticket for two adults and two children 54 EUR, under-7s free. Open daily 10:00 to 18:00 from 1 December 2026 to 28 February 2027, except 24 December. From March to November it is closed on Mondays.

Husky, reindeer and snowmobile trips are sold by many companies around the town, from rides of a few minutes in Santa Claus Village to trips of three hours or more. Prices vary widely: a 400 m reindeer sleigh ride in the village starts at 30 EUR and a three-hour reindeer safari at 160 EUR.

Ounasvaara is the town’s own hill and year-round recreation area, one of the places on our things to do in Rovaniemi page, with marked trails whose nearest point is 1.6 km east of the centre. Its ski resort has 11 slopes, most of them 500 to 600 m long, five lifts, a children’s and beginners’ area and maintained cross-country tracks. Good for a first go at skiing. Not for a skiing holiday.

The Northern Lights season runs from late August to early April, and Visit Rovaniemi points to watching spots from a short walk out of the centre to the quiet country around the town; our Northern Lights guide explains how to give yourself a fair chance. Beyond all that, Visit Rovaniemi also lists snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, ice fishing and ice floating in winter, and canoeing, river cruises, hiking and cycling among its other activities.

Picking an area before a hotel

Choose the area first and the place second. Our where to stay in Rovaniemi page names one or two places per area with the price each one publishes.

The centre suits you if you arrive without a car: Visit Rovaniemi’s own advice is that walking is the way to get around it, and the local buses, bus 8 to Santa Claus Village included, run through it. Ounasvaara suits you if you want the trails and the ski hill close by with the centre still near, since the nearest trail point is 1.6 km from it. The Arctic Circle area around Santa Claus Village suits a trip built around young children and Santa: several companies there offer accommodation, including a holiday village and the glass-roofed cabins sold as glass igloos, the airport is about 3 km away and the centre is 8 km away by bus or taxi. Visit Rovaniemi also lists cottages and wilderness stays outside the town, which are easier with a hire car.

Flights, the night train, and the bus into town

Most UK visitors fly. For winter 2026 to 2027, Visit Rovaniemi lists direct seasonal flights from London (Gatwick, Stansted, Luton and Southend), Manchester, Birmingham and Edinburgh. The longest schedule we saw runs from 25 October 2026 to 27 March 2027, and some routes run only around Christmas. Finnair flies daily from Helsinki. From the airport, a private bus service, Airport Express, meets arriving flights and runs to the centre and the railway station by way of Santa Claus Village. The same company runs Santa’s Express between the centre and the village in winter. Its one-way summer fare was 8 EUR when we checked; the winter fare was not yet listed. Taxis and car hire are the alternatives.

By rail, VR’s overnight Santa Claus Express runs from Helsinki and Turku, with seats or sleeper cabins and space for your car, and several trains a day run between Helsinki and Rovaniemi. Matkahuolto and Onnibus run coaches.

In town, walk or take the local buses. A single adult ticket is 3.60 EUR in cash or by contactless card, or 3.30 EUR in the Waltti app, where a 24-hour ticket costs 9 EUR. Children aged 0 to 16 pay 1.80 EUR in cash or 1.65 EUR in the app, but contactless card payment is 3.60 EUR per person at any age. If you drive in winter, Visit Rovaniemi’s advice is to allow extra time for the distances and the changing weather.
