Lapland in December

How dark it gets, and what is left of the day

December is the darkest month of the Lapland year. In Rovaniemi the sun still rises, clearing the horizon for 3 hours 45 minutes on 1 December and for 2 hours 15 minutes on 21 December, the shortest day. Further north it stops. Inari sees it for under an hour on 1 December and then not at all from 2 December to the end of the month, Utsjoki does not see it once, and in the northernmost corner of Finland kaamos, the polar night, lasts 51 days.

The days are not pitch black, though. Sunlight still reaches the upper atmosphere, so the hours around noon have a blue twilight even where the sun never appears. In Rovaniemi on 21 December, civil twilight, when you can often manage outdoors without a lamp, runs from about 09:15 to 15:15, just under six hours. Anything you plan outdoors has to fit inside that.

December is for snow, darkness and Christmas. A snow cover is normal by mid-December, the nights are the longest of the year, and a trip built around Santa has its own page, Christmas in Lapland. Do not expect long days outdoors or a cheap week, and think twice if weeks of cold and darkness wear you down. Three places, three Decembers

The columns run Rovaniemi, Inari, Utsjoki, each further north than the last. Sun times are calculated for December 2026 in Finnish time, with sunrise as the Finnish Meteorological Institute defines it. Temperatures are the Institute’s averages for 1991 to 2020 and snow depths its medians for the same years: thirty Decembers averaged out, where your trip gets just one.

Long nights are only half of what the Northern Lights need

You see an aurora only when three things coincide: a dark sky, a clear sky and enough geomagnetic activity. December has the longest nights of the year, so darkness is never short, but it has no influence on the other two, and nobody can promise you a display.

Cloud is December’s weak point. The Finnish Meteorological Institute puts the cloudiest stretch of the year in late autumn and early winter, and the months it recommends are February to March and September to October. It also finds that auroras occur slightly more often around spring and autumn than in midwinter. December still works for the aurora; it is simply not the Institute’s first choice.

The likeliest hours are from about 21:00 to 01:00 local time. Allow several nights, so that one overcast evening cannot end your chances. Cold spells and thin snow years

An average December day at Rovaniemi airport runs from a low of -10.6 °C to a high of -4.9 °C, and the low drops below -10 °C on about 15 days in the month. Inari and Utsjoki are colder. The extremes go further than the averages suggest: the coldest December reading at Rovaniemi airport between 1991 and 2020 was -30.7 °C, in 1995. Some years run warm instead, and December 2025 averaged -6.3 °C at Rovaniemi airport, against a normal of -7.7 °C.

In a typical year the snow deepens through the month, from a median 28 cm on 15 December to 38 cm on the 31st at Rovaniemi airport, on the 1991 to 2020 record. Individual years vary enough to make or break a holiday. In mid-December 2024 the Institute reported that some stations in southern Lapland had less than 10 cm, a depth it said occurs less than once every 30 years, while the same point in 2023 saw between 25 cm and half a metre. At Sodankylä, further north, 15 December brought 52 cm in 2025 and 20 cm in 2024.

Visit Finland’s advice for families is to dress in layers, with wool next to the skin and waterproof, windproof outer layers.

The price of everyone coming at once

December is the peak of Lapland’s year. Hotel rooms across the region were 79% occupied on average in December 2025, and a room averaged about 324 EUR a night, about twice the average for Finland as a whole (160 EUR); Statistics Finland’s release for the month named Lapland the most expensive region. For comparison, the Lapland average in January 2026 was 261 EUR. In December 2024, 82% of Lapland’s hotel rooms were taken.

Within the month there is less to go on. The Santa Claus Village says most of its businesses keep longer opening hours from the end of November to early January, and the Santa office in the village calls December its most popular time of year. We looked for figures that split December week by week and found none, so we cannot say whether the first half is quieter or cheaper than the second. Price your own dates and compare.

Christmas changes opening hours. The main celebration in Finland is on Christmas Eve, 24 December, and many shops and offices close over the Christmas public holidays. In Levi, Visit Levi says grocery stores, souvenir shops and restaurants are open in Christmas week.

New Year in Lapland: what runs over 31 December and 1 January

The Christmas closures fall on 24 to 26 December. New Year’s Eve is a night out in Finland: InfoFinland describes firework displays on 31 December, rockets on sale in shops and time limits on when you may fire them. By then the light is coming back. On 31 December 2026 the sun is up in Rovaniemi from 11:01 to 13:40, 2 hours 39 minutes, longer than on the solstice, with civil twilight from 09:17 to 15:24. Inari and Utsjoki still see no sunrise.

Levi’s own events page had no New Year’s Eve 2026 entry when we looked on 25 September 2026, so the Levi row is last season’s programme and a guide to the shape of the night, nothing more. Visit Levi calls the midnight display on the front slopes a tradition. In Rovaniemi, the city’s own pages about its New Year events would not load, and Visit Rovaniemi says its 2026 Christmas event information will be updated later.

Visit Levi recommends booking Christmas dinner ahead, and we would treat dinner on 31 December the same way. If the aurora is part of the plan, its usual hours of 21:00 to 01:00 run straight through midnight, so after the display, walk out of the village lights and look north.

What to lock in first

With about four in five Lapland hotel rooms taken in December, beds run out first, and Visit Levi says the Christmas weeks are among the first to be booked. Settle the accommodation on the day you settle your dates. Flights come next, and you may have to fit your dates to them: the new direct UK routes Finavia announced in June and July 2026 for winter 2026 to 2027 each run twice a week, so if you fly direct, the flight days fix the length of your trip. Three things are easy to leave too late:

• The night train, if you connect through Helsinki. VR has night train tickets on sale for dates up to 25 April 2027.
• Christmas dinner, if you will be there on 24 or 25 December. Visit Levi recommends booking it ahead.
• Activities, once your nights are fixed, with anything outdoors placed in the late morning and early afternoon light.
