Tromsø or Rovaniemi: Norwegian or Finnish Lapland?

Tromsø is in Norway, not Finnish Lapland: a coastal city above the Arctic Circle, surrounded by fjords, with a true polar night that Visit Tromsø gives as late November to mid-January. Rovaniemi is inland, on the Arctic Circle, and keeps a short but real daylight even at the solstice, about 2 hours 15 minutes on 21 December. Pick Tromsø for a city built around fjords and mountains; pick Rovaniemi for Santa Claus Village, a wider choice of Finnish bases nearby, and an overnight train from Helsinki.

The two in one table

Tromsø is coastal Norway, not Finnish Lapland. It turns up in the same search because it sells the same trip: a Northern Lights city break above the Arctic Circle. Here is where the two part company.

The cold, and the currency

Two rows in that table are thinner than the rest, and both gaps are ours.

Tromsø’s coastal position is commonly said to keep its winters milder than an inland Arctic place at the same latitude. We went looking for a Norwegian Meteorological Institute figure to put beside Rovaniemi’s and did not come away with one, so this page prints no temperature claim for Tromsø at all. Official sources gave us the shape of the darkness and not the shape of the cold: Visit Tromsø publishes the polar night dates, Rovaniemi’s numbers come from FMI’s own climate report, and the two are not measured the same way. We have not forced them into one row.

Currency stays separate for the same reason. Norway prices in NOK, Finland in EUR, and this page converts neither into the other. Where a NOK figure would not come off an operator’s own page, the table says so and stops there.

Rovaniemi to Tromsø direct, in summer at least

Nobody says you have to pick one. Finavia’s own route listing for summer and autumn 2026 shows Finnair flying Rovaniemi to Tromsø direct in that season. Whether the same route runs in winter is a question Finavia’s pages did not answer for us, and in winter the two cities are otherwise linked only by a longer trip through Oslo or Helsinki. Check the airline’s own timetable for your dates. Do not assume the summer route repeats.

When the answer flips

• Tromsø, if a coastal city with fjords and a longer polar night is the point of the trip. Visit Tromsø’s polar night runs from late November to mid-January; Rovaniemi keeps a short daylight even at the solstice.
• Rovaniemi, if you want the earliest possible start to the aurora season. On the dates each tourism board publishes, Visit Rovaniemi’s season opens in late August, a few weeks ahead of Visit Tromsø’s September start, though both run to early April.
• Rovaniemi, if you want to arrive by train. Our train guide covers VR’s overnight service from Helsinki. No equivalent rail line reaches Tromsø.
• Finland, if you want several bases in one country within a few hours of each other. Rovaniemi, Levi and Ylläs sit close together. This page compares Tromsø as a single city, because that is how the search for it is usually framed.
