Rovaniemi or Levi: which base suits you?

Rovaniemi is the pick if you want a city that works without a car, Santa Claus Village and something to do when the weather cancels a tour. Choose Levi to ski or snowmobile, or for the darker sky of a fell resort: it sits at about 67.7°N, far enough north that the sun does not rise at all on the shortest day.

The two in one table

Both sit in western Finnish Lapland and both have an airport within 15 km. The resemblance ends there.

Price is the one row we cannot split

People expect the bill to be the big difference, and we cannot show you that it is. Statistics Finland publishes hotel prices by region, so what exists is a figure for Lapland as a whole and nothing for Rovaniemi against Levi.

What does differ is what the money buys after the room. In Levi the daily spend is a lift pass and ski hire. In Rovaniemi it is museums and Santa Claus Village, with a good deal of the centre walkable and free.

A table is worst at how the two places feel. Rovaniemi is a working city of shops, offices and a university that happens to have tourism built into it. Levi is a resort, and what is there is there for the slopes and the safaris. Neither is the better place, and the trip you want decides between them.

When the answer flips

• Rovaniemi, if you have young children and only three nights. Santa Claus Village is 8 km from the centre on a bus route, and there is somewhere indoors to go when a tour is cancelled. Christmas in Lapland covers what that trip really contains.
• Levi, if you want to ski or snowboard for more than a morning. Most of Ounasvaara’s slopes are 500 to 600 m long. Levi is Finland’s largest ski resort and is built around its lifts.
• Levi again, if you want the darkest sky available without going further north. At about 67.7°N the sun does not rise on the shortest day, and it is one of the three resorts FMI names in its roughly 50% group. If that is the whole point of the trip, read when to go before you book anything.
• Rovaniemi, if you are arriving by train. It has a railway station served by the night train from Helsinki, while Levi is reached by flying into Kittilä. Our flights guide covers which airport suits which base.
• Neither, in December, if you want a quiet trip. Rovaniemi fills up around Christmas and Levi is a resort by design. Look at a fell base further north, or a month outside the peak: Lapland in March has long days, deep snow and fewer people than December.

Levi Ski Resort’s own figures, from its news release of 13 February 2026, are 44 slopes and 26 lifts, and it says the 2026 to 2027 season lasts until early May, with some slopes closing from mid-April. One figure still defeated us on a primary source: the temperature normals for a Kittilä-area station.
