Salla, Finland: is it worth the detour?

Salla’s whole case, and its whole problem, is distance. Sources for each row are at the foot of the page.

Nothing here is close to anything

Visit Salla’s own figures put the municipality 150 km from Rovaniemi, 110 km from Kuusamo, the airport that also serves Ruka, and 67 km from Kemijärvi, the nearest railway station. It names Kuusamo and Rovaniemi as the two nearest airports, both a further drive away once you land. None of that is close, and Salla’s own tourism material leans into it, describing the area as being “in the middle of nowhere” while still reachable.

That distance is also the product. Salla holds Sustainable Travel Finland certification, and its ski resort, Sallatunturi, was named Finland’s Ski Resort of the Year in 2021 on the strength of things a bigger resort cannot easily offer: no lift queues, an FIS-certified competition slope used by national ski teams for training camps, and electricity described by the resort as 100% renewable and eco-certified. If a good ski day for you includes a lift queue you get to walk past, Salla has one to offer. It has it because the place is quiet, and not because the resort is thin.

A new national park against a closed border

Salla National Park opened on 1 January 2022, making it Finland’s newest and, by number, its 41st national park. We could not read the park authority’s own description in detail, because Metsähallitus’s site (luontoon.fi) is a JavaScript application that returns no content to an automated, non-browser fetch, which this site’s writers are required to use. From what we could confirm elsewhere, the park sits partly along Finland’s border with Russia to its east, and the ground still carries the marks of the Tuntsa wildfire of 1960, which burned a wide area of the forest that has since regrown.

The border is part of Salla’s identity, and it is shut. Salla is one of Finland’s official crossing points into Russia, and the Finnish government closed it, along with Kuusamo and Vartius, from 24 November 2023, having already closed four other crossings days earlier. Every remaining crossing on the eastern border followed within weeks. On the government’s most recent decision, taken in June 2026, all of the eastern crossings remain closed until further notice, with asylum applications centralised at the crossings that do function for other purposes. In practice Salla is a place to look at the border from. Not a place to cross it.

Temperatures, and a day under two hours

The table is the average daily low and high at Salla kirkonkylä, the village weather station, over 1991 to 2020. It carries temperature only. We could not confirm a clean snow-depth figure for this station from the same report, so unlike our other destination pages there is no snow column here; until we can check one directly, treat Salla’s snow as at least as reliable as Kuusamo’s and Rovaniemi’s, both close by at a similar or lower latitude.

The lowest reading at the station in those 30 years was -45.3 °C, in January 1999.

Around the shortest day, moisio.fi puts sunrise at 11:10 and sunset at 12:57 on 21 December, about 1 hour 47 minutes of daylight, with the sun reaching only about a quarter of a degree above the horizon at its highest. It does still rise, so this falls short of the polar night, but only just. Crossing the line at Hautajärvi

Rovaniemi’s Arctic Circle marker, at Santa Claus Village, is the one most visitors see. Salla has its own crossing, further from the roads: the line runs through Hautajärvi village in South Salla, and Visit Salla’s own site describes guided trips there on foot or with snowshoes, followed by lunch at the Napapiiri café and a certificate marking the crossing. It is a slower, quieter version of the same line, useful if you have already done the marker at Rovaniemi and want the fact without the crowd. No airport, so plan the road

There is no airport in Salla itself. Visit Salla names Kuusamo and Rovaniemi as the two nearest, 110 km and 150 km away respectively, and gives a driving distance of 67 km from Kemijärvi’s railway station, the nearest point on VR’s network.

From Helsinki that generally means a flight or overnight train to Rovaniemi or Kuusamo and then a road transfer, or a train to Kemijärvi and a transfer from there. We could not find a published local bus timetable between Salla and either airport on the sources we could reach. Plan on a hire car, a transfer arranged with your accommodation, or a taxi, and confirm whichever one before you travel.
