Kemi, Finland: is it worth the trip?

A working port that sells two things

Kemi is a working port town, and its tourism grew straight out of the harbour: a cruise on a genuine icebreaker out onto the frozen Bay of Bothnia, and a snow and ice attraction beside the harbour. Visit Kemi’s own site adds cycling routes, the town’s inner harbour and Northern Lights viewing to the list, but the ship and the snow are what bring most visitors this far down the coast.

Both are run by the same company now, The Icebreaking Company, formerly branded Experience 365, so the two share a check-in point at the SnowCastle site for the icebreaker cruise and the same shuttle buses from Kemi, Rovaniemi, Tornio and Oulu.

The SnowCastle you may be picturing

Kemi’s SnowCastle began in 1996, when the city and UNICEF opened the first one as a gift to the world’s children. It became famous. Wikipedia’s account, which matches the older travel writing about Kemi, calls it the biggest snow fort in the world, rebuilt each winter from natural snow and ice with a chapel, a restaurant and decorated hotel rooms, then melting away every spring.

The operator’s current site says otherwise. Its history page states that the annual rebuild has “not been built in the area for years,” and that the attraction moved instead into a permanent, year-round SnowExperience365 building, completed in 2019 and 2020, with an ice exhibit, an ice restaurant and ice sculptures that do not depend on being remade from scratch each winter. A separate, seasonal SnowCastle Winter Park runs alongside it in the colder months. When we checked in September 2026, the operator’s own page showed the 2026 Winter Park season as closed, ahead of the winter opening, with no 2026-27 dates or ticket prices yet published.

So if the annual rebuild was the whole reason Kemi was on your list, we would skip the snow attraction and put the day into the icebreaker. Onto the sea ice aboard the Sampo

The Sampo, described by its operator as “the Official Icebreaker of Santa Claus,” runs Arctic cruises onto the frozen Bay of Bothnia from Veitsiluoto Port in Kemi. For winter 2026 to 2027 it operates from 18 December 2026 to 3 April 2027. A morning cruise runs 3.5 hours and an afternoon cruise 4 hours, taking in a vessel tour, a welcome drink, entrance to the SnowCastle exhibitions, a diploma, and the part everyone comes for: floating in a survival suit among the sea ice, with a lunch buffet added on the afternoon departure.

The operator’s own practical page sets a minimum height of 140 cm for the children’s floating suits and asks for “normal physical health and basic water-safety skills,” with staff assessing participants before they go in. Every passenger checks in at the SnowCastle site before departure, by 07:30 for the morning cruise or 11:30 for the afternoon one, and shuttle buses leave from fixed stops in Kemi, Rovaniemi, Tornio/Haparanda and Oulu; there are no hotel pickups.

Whether the ice floating and the walk on frozen sea happen at all is decided on the day, by the wind and ice conditions, at the captain’s judgement. We found no adult or child price on the operator’s own pages; current rates appear only inside its booking system.

Degrees and daylight on the coast

In January Kemi runs milder than Kuusamo, inland at a similar latitude, though not milder than Rovaniemi. Its January average low is 1.8 °C higher than Kuusamo’s, and its coldest recorded reading in the 30-year record, -42.6 °C in January 1999, is milder than the -44.9 °C recorded the same winter at Kuusamo airport. The table is the average daily low and high at Kemi-Tornio Airport, the coastal station, over 1991 to 2020.

Around the shortest day, moisio.fi puts sunrise at 10:49 and sunset at 13:50 on 21 December, about 3 hours 1 minute of daylight. That is longer than Rovaniemi’s or Kuusamo’s on the same date, because Kemi sits somewhat further south. For the aurora the trade runs the other way: Kemi’s more southerly, coastal position works against it here, though the Finnish Meteorological Institute publishes no separate figure for Kemi itself. Trains, coaches and a five-minute drive

Kemi-Tornio Airport serves both towns. Finavia puts it about a 5-minute drive from Kemi’s centre and roughly 25 minutes from Tornio, which shares a border crossing point with Haparanda in Sweden and is described as the northernmost twin city in the world.

Visit Kemi’s own site says the town is reachable by rail, with the railway station centrally placed, and by long-distance coach, with bus lines running both north and south. It gives no timetables. Those change by season, so check current departures with VR or Matkahuolto before you travel.
