Inari, Finland: is it the right base for you?

What the village adds up to

Inari is small enough that the whole case for coming fits in one table, with its sources at the foot of the page.

Two nights here, sometimes three

Two nights is enough for Siida, an afternoon at Sajos and a walk or a drive along the shore of Lake Inari.

The third night buys options: a boat trip in summer, ice fishing or a snowmobile run across the frozen lake in winter, or an evening kept free for the aurora. That last one is why we would add it. The aurora needs a dark, clear sky and solar activity in the same hour, and none of those three is for sale.

Inari is the administrative centre of Inari municipality, the largest municipality in Finland by area at about 5% of the country’s total surface. The village is nothing like that big. On the municipality’s own figures, two-thirds of its population live in Ivalo, and what gives Inari its weight is what stands here, not how many people do. Lake Inari is the third-largest lake in Finland and the country’s second-deepest, with around 3,318 islands. One of them, Ukonsaari, has been a Sámi place of worship: a rock outcrop roughly 30 m high, 50 m wide and 100 m long, rising out of the water close to the village.

Cold, snow and five weeks without sunrise

The 1991 to 2020 report from the Finnish Meteorological Institute has no long-record station at Inari village itself, so this page borrows the nearest one, at Ivalo Airport, as Saariselkä does. Average daily low and high there, with the typical (median) snow depth on the 15th.

The village sits slightly further north than the airport, so its dark stretch runs a little longer at each end. On moisio.fi’s sunrise and sunset calculator the sun last rose on 1 December 2026 and was not due back above the horizon until 10 January 2027, which is about five and a half weeks of it. Day by day, that is Lapland in December and Lapland in January.

Siida, Sajos and the lake

Siida is the reason most people come. It is the national museum for Sámi culture and the regional museum for the wider area, with a permanent exhibition that runs Sámi culture and Arctic nature together, and an open-air museum of nearly fifty historic buildings and structures, along an 800 m trail laid out in the shape of a reindeer herder’s lasso. Its own site showed the main exhibitions open every day, 9:00 to 18:00, from 1 June to 27 September 2026, with adult admission at 18 EUR, a family ticket at 36 EUR, 7 EUR for children aged 7 to 17 and nothing for under-7s. The same page gave no winter opening hours, and we have not found them elsewhere.

Sajos is the other half of the village’s case. It holds the Sámi Parliament’s main office and parliament hall, seats up to 430 people, has a restaurant, Čaiju, and sells guided tours of the building. It is the largest conference and event venue in Northern Lapland.

Then there is the lake. Boat trips run in summer; in winter, snowmobile and ice-fishing trips cross it frozen. Read our Sámi culture guide before you book anything sold as a Sámi experience, so you know what to ask.

Lemmenjoki National Park is the long day out. Finland’s largest, in the municipalities of Inari and Kittilä, reached from Inari’s direction, and known for guided gold-panning trips and for the homestead of Kaapin Jouni, which tells the story of Sámi reindeer-herding life. Metsähallitus’s own listings put its area at about 285,790 hectares and its visits at around 10,000 a year. Neither figure could be confirmed at source: the park’s own page returned nothing but its navigation shell when we opened it.

Beds in Inari, and what we have not checked

We have not published an Inari accommodation listing, because we have not settled a selection rule we would stand behind for one. Until we do, where to stay in Lapland compares the kinds of stay on offer across the region, hotels, cabins and glass-roofed rooms among them.

The bus from Törmänen, and the road south

Ivalo Airport is the nearest airport to Inari. Neither Finavia’s own airport page nor Inari municipality’s travel page states the road distance between the two, so we will not put a number on it.

What they do give is a timetable. A weekday bus service that started on 11 August 2025 runs from the Törmänen area near the airport to Inari’s K-market and on to the Sámi Education Institute, taking about 35 minutes from the airport junction; on the timetable we read, it departs Törmänen at 7:40, reaches Inari’s K-market at 8:25, and an afternoon service returns from the K-market at 16:00. A charter shuttle to the village is also bookable, run by a named local operator. Fares for either service were not published on the pages we opened.

By road, Inari sits on highway 4, the same road that runs south through Ivalo and Saariselkä to Rovaniemi, so pairing it with Saariselkä is a simple drive.
