A year of Rovaniemi weather at the airport station

All the temperatures and snow depths below come from one weather station, at Rovaniemi airport, 10 km from the centre and 189 m above sea level, averaged over 1991 to 2020 by the Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI). Temperatures are the average daily low and high. Snow is the median depth on the 15th, which means that in half of those winters there was less. Daylight is sunrise to sunset on the 15th, calculated with moisio.fi for the coming year.

January and February are the cold months, with the same average high of -7.3 °C. March keeps most of their snow and loses a lot of their cold: its lows average -9.1 °C, and it gets close to three and a half hours more daylight than mid-February. July is both the warmest month and the wettest, with 81 mm. The driest stretch is February to April, at 34 to 37 mm a month.

For what each month is good for, and what it is not, our when to go page takes the same station month by month, and each month has its own page, from Lapland in November to Lapland in March.

The Rovaniemi forecast for your dates

A thirty-year normal describes a typical month. For the week you are actually there, the forecast to use is the one published by the national weather service. FMI’s weather page for Rovaniemi gives an hourly forecast and daily highs and lows, and you can switch it between 5, 10 and 15 days. The page stops at 15 days. For dates further off, the normals in the table are what you have to go on.

To see the snow on the ground today, FMI’s observations in Finland page shows the latest reading from its stations, snow depth included. For a picture rather than a number, our Lapland webcams page collects the public cameras around Rovaniemi and the resorts.

How cold a Rovaniemi night gets

For packing, the count of cold nights tells you more than the average. In an average January the low drops below -10 °C on 20 days, and on 28 days the temperature stays below freezing all day. February has 18 of those cold nights and March still has 13.

The cold snaps go far lower. The lowest reading at the airport between 1991 and 2020 was -38.1 °C, in January 1999, and February went down to -33.9 °C in 1998. Even December has reached -30.7 °C. At the other end, July 2018 brought 31.0 °C, and an average July has four days above 25 °C.

How to dress for nights like these is in our what to wear in Lapland guide.

When the snow comes and goes in Rovaniemi

Snow builds slowly through the dark months and then holds for a long time. The median depth at the airport is 1 cm on the last day of October, 19 cm on the last day of November and 38 cm at the end of December. It passes 70 cm in February and stays there through March: 73 cm on 28 February, 77 cm on 15 March and 75 cm on 31 March. April melts it fast, from 64 cm on the 15th to 27 cm on the 30th, and by mid-May the median is nothing.

FMI’s own summary of Finnish snow says the same in general terms: the cover is usually thickest in mid-March, and in Lapland often as late as early April. If a white Christmas is the point of the trip, remember that the 28 cm on 15 December is a median, so half of those thirty Decembers had less.

Daylight, twilight and the aurora

The Arctic Circle is marked at Santa Claus Village, 8 km north of the centre, and in Rovaniemi the sun rises every day of the year. On 21 December 2026 it rises at 11:08 and sets at 13:22, a day of 2 hours 15 minutes, and moisio.fi adds 1 hour 51 minutes of twilight before sunrise and again after sunset, when in clear weather there is still enough light to be outdoors without a lamp. By 15 February 2027 the day is 8 hours 10 minutes long.

The aurora needs the dark, so the season follows the light: Visit Rovaniemi gives it as late August to early April, on clear nights. FMI puts the chance of seeing the aurora on a dark, cloudless night at roughly 50% at Lapland’s ski resorts and roughly 25% around Oulu and Kuusamo, and gives no separate figure for Rovaniemi, which lies between them. A forecast can warn you about cloud a few days ahead, so keep a clear-looking evening free for it. Our Northern Lights guide explains how many nights to allow.

Daylight on your dates

Pick a base and a date to see when the sun rises and sets, and how long the light lasts.

This calculator needs JavaScript. Each month page gives the daylight for that month in print.

Worked out in your browser from the position of the sun, by the method of the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Sunrise and sunset are for a flat horizon, so fells, forest and cloud make the day you see shorter. Our month pages quote moisio.fi, which can differ from these times by a few minutes.

Three things people misread about Rovaniemi weather

A December trip means constant darkness. The sun rises every day in Rovaniemi, even on 21 December, and there are close to two hours of twilight either side of it.

The coldest month is December. The long nights make it feel that way, but on the airport’s normals January and February are colder, with average lows of -13.5 °C and -13.3 °C against December’s -10.6 °C.

The weather will be the same as in Levi. Levi, Ylläs and Saariselkä are further north. Their snow lasts longer into spring and their midwinter days are shorter, and our Levi weather page has the figures for that corner of Lapland. For how the town works as a base, go back to our Rovaniemi guide.

Who this is not for

Anyone who has already booked and wants to know what next Tuesday will bring. This page holds thirty-year normals, and for a forecast you need the Finnish Meteorological Institute’s own Rovaniemi page, which runs to 15 days. The figures are also for the town: further north, at Levi, Ylläs or Saariselkä, the winter days are shorter and the snow lies later into spring.
