Levi weather: snow, cold and daylight by month

Levi has no long-term weather station of its own, so its normals come from the two nearest, Muonio village about 50 km west and Kittilä Pokka about 60 km north-east. Both average January lows near -18 °C and highs near -9 °C, and both hold more than 75 cm of snow in mid-March. For the forecast, use the Finnish Meteorological Institute’s Levi page.

Why Levi’s numbers come from two other places

The Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) publishes its 1991 to 2020 climate normals station by station, and none of those stations is at Levi or at Kittilä airport. Two stations in the report are in Kittilä municipality. Kittilä Alakylä, south of Kittilä village, appears only in the report’s tables of rain and snow depth. Kittilä Pokka, 276 m up and about 60 km north-east of Levi, has the full set of temperature tables. The nearest full station is Muonio village (Muonio kirkonkylä), 236 m up and about 50 km to the west.

So this page gives you both, side by side, and they agree closely through the winter. Both stations sit far below the top of Levi, which Wikipedia gives as 531 m, so treat them as a guide to the village and the valleys around it.

Set against Rovaniemi, this corner of Lapland is colder by several degrees at night. A January low of -18.1 °C at Muonio compares with -13.5 °C at Rovaniemi airport, and it holds more snow for longer. Summer is mild at both stations, with July running from 9.7 to 19.2 °C at Muonio and from 8.4 to 19.0 °C at Pokka.

The extremes are harder. In the thirty years the lowest reading at Muonio was -46.2 °C and at Pokka -51.5 °C, both in January 1999. On an average January 24 nights at Muonio drop below -10 °C, and 23 at Pokka.

Snow at Levi and the ski season

Levi Ski Resort opens its 2026 to 2027 season on 2 October 2026 on the Front Slopes, using snow it stored from the winter before, and says the season lasts until early May. The stations show why the opening is built on stored snow. On the last day of October the median depth is 6 cm at Muonio and 8 cm at Pokka. By the end of November it is 25 cm at Muonio and 32 cm at Pokka.

The natural snow comes later. Levi says its unlit natural-snow slopes normally open in February, once there is enough snow, and by then the median is 67 cm at Muonio and 78 cm at Pokka. It peaks in March and melts slowly. On 30 April there is still a median of 40 cm at Muonio and 62 cm at Pokka, and on 15 May Pokka still has 21 cm, when Rovaniemi has none. That long tail is what makes April skiing here realistic. Levi says some slopes and lifts start closing from mid-April, and publishes the day’s open runs on its slopes and lifts page.

Daylight at Kittilä through the winter

The sun calculator used across this site has no entry for Levi itself, so these are its times for Kittilä, at 67.667°N, the municipality Levi is part of. Levi is about 15 km further north, so its midwinter days run a little shorter than these.

The last sunrise of 2026 comes on 13 December, when the sun is above the horizon for 12 minutes. From 14 December it does not rise at all, and it is back on 31 December for 43 minutes. Those two and a half weeks are not black: in clear weather the twilight around midday is enough to see by outdoors. By mid-February you have close to eight hours of sun, and by mid-March more than eleven.

The Levi weather forecast, and the view on the slopes

For the days you are there, use FMI’s weather page for Levi, which it files under Kittilä. It is the national weather service’s forecast for the resort, hour by hour and up to 15 days ahead. FMI’s observations in Finland page shows its stations’ latest readings, snow depth among them.

To see the fell rather than read about it, Levi Ski Resort runs slope cameras, and our Lapland webcams page gathers public cameras from across the region.

Clear skies matter for more than skiing. FMI names Levi among the Lapland ski resorts where it puts the chance of seeing the aurora on a dark, cloudless night at roughly 50%, and the forecast is where you find the clear night. Our Northern Lights guide covers the rest.

Choosing your Levi weeks

If you want the widest choice of slopes, come between February and mid-April, when the natural-snow runs are open and the days are long. January is the coldest month at both stations, with 3 h 27 min of sun on the 15th, and it suits people who want the dark more than the pistes. Late November and early December give you short days and the first real snow, with the Front Slopes open on stored snow.

For everything else about the resort, where to stay and how to get there from Kittilä airport, go back to our Levi guide. If you are still choosing a base, our Rovaniemi vs Levi comparison sets the two side by side, and Rovaniemi’s weather page has the same figures for the town.

Who this is not for

Anyone who wants the temperature on the slopes for a given day. The station figures here are thirty-year normals from two villages in the valleys, and the fell top can be colder, warmer or windier on the day. For that, read the Finnish Meteorological Institute’s Levi forecast and the resort’s own slope cameras.
