5-star Lapland holidays: what actually justifies the price

A luxury Lapland holiday is realistic if you are paying for specific, checkable things: a private guide, an isolated wilderness lodge, an entire glass-roofed house to yourselves, or a private transfer instead of a shared one. None of it buys a better chance of the Northern Lights.

Four things with a published fact behind them

In a brochure, luxury is an adjective. On an invoice it is one of four things, and you can check every one of them before you pay.

The first is a whole building. Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort’s Luxury Kelo-Glass Igloo is a 310 m² house for up to 12 people: three log-cabin bedrooms, three glass-domed bedrooms, its own sauna, a full kitchen, a living room with a fireplace, daily cleaning, and a private airport transfer in the price.

The second is a guide working for nobody else that evening. Lapland Welcome’s private aurora tour from Saariselkä is named for up to four guests and hands one guide and one route to your group for a 5-hour evening. There is a catch worth knowing. Its shared Rovaniemi tour offers a free repeat within two weeks if the lights do not appear; the private tour’s own page does not repeat that promise. Ask whether it applies before you pay the higher price.

The third is distance from everyone else. Wilderness Hotel Nellim sits in Nellim village on the shore of Lake Inari, about 45 minutes from Ivalo airport, and sells privately guided husky, snowmobile, reindeer and ice-fishing trips instead of scheduled group departures.

The fourth is a list of extras with names on it. Levin Iglut’s Suite Igloo in Levi adds a private terrace and jacuzzi, a Moët & Chandon champagne welcome drink, a stocked minibar and a porter for your luggage, on top of what its plainer Superior Igloo gives you.

None of the four changes your chance of seeing the aurora. That takes darkness, a clear sky and solar activity together, whatever you paid for the bed underneath it. See our Northern Lights guide for what decides it.

What it costs

Prices as published on each operator’s own site. Some luxury properties print no nightly rate at all on the pages we opened. Where that happened, the table says so instead of carrying a guess.

Private airport transfer, one wayKakslauttanen, SaariselkäPer carFrom 626 EUR

The transfer line is the whole idea in miniature. Kakslauttanen’s private car costs several times what its shared shuttle costs over the same 40-minute journey, and the road is identical. You are paying for the seat next to you being empty, on the road, in the cabin and beside the guide. For everything else a trip like this costs, see what Lapland really costs.

The husky safari costs the same whatever you sleep in

Kakslauttanen’s own activity list puts an ordinary two-hour husky safari at around 80 EUR a person and a two-hour reindeer safari at around 94 EUR, with meeting Santa at its own Santa’s Home from around 60 EUR. Those numbers do not move when the bed does. The daytime is priced the same whether the night is spent in the Small Glass Igloo or in the whole Luxury Kelo-Glass Igloo. A luxury trip is not a trip on which everything costs more. It is a trip on which four specific things do.

What it costs for two, for six, for twelve

Capacity decides more of the bill than the word “luxury” does. A couple on their own pays the full 738 EUR a night for Wilderness Hotel Nellim’s 2-guest Aurora Premium Cabin, with nobody to halve it with. Put six into the 1,096 EUR Aurora Deluxe Cabin and the cost per person drops below what the smaller cabin charges a couple. Fill all 12 places in Kakslauttanen’s Luxury Kelo-Glass Igloo and 1,963 EUR a night divides twelve ways, which can undercut several separate rooms elsewhere before anyone has counted the private transfer included in it.

What to drop

Paying more in the hope of better odds. The most expensive room in this guide sits under the same sky as the least expensive one.

A private guide for every hour of the trip. Some of the best things in Lapland cost nothing at all, whoever you booked through.

And the assumption that “suite” or “premium” means bigger. At Wilderness Hotel Nellim the smaller 2-guest Aurora Premium Cabin costs more per night than the larger 4-guest Aurora Cabin. Read the capacity and the price as two separate facts, and read the name as marketing.

Saariselkä, Levi, Inari or Rovaniemi

Saariselkä has the deepest luxury offer we found, through Kakslauttanen’s private houses and Lapland Welcome’s private tours. Levi adds Levin Iglut’s glass suites on Utsuvaara fell, reachable through Kittilä airport. Inari is the one to choose for real remoteness: Wilderness Hotel Nellim sits on Lake Inari, about 45 minutes from Ivalo airport, and that distance is most of what you are buying. Rovaniemi gives the shortest transfer from the airport of any base here, which matters when a private car is part of the bill, and the widest choice of direct UK flights.

Where you land does not change the list. It is still a private guide, a private room, or a private transfer.

Who this is not for

Anyone hoping money buys a guarantee of the Northern Lights: no operator, however expensive, controls the weather or the solar wind (see our Northern Lights guide). Anyone who wants five-star service on a modest budget: every property in this guide costs several times an ordinary hotel room in the same region. Anyone who prizes company over quiet: the point of a wilderness lodge is being away from other guests.
