Finnish Lapland or Swedish Lapland: which one?

Choose Finnish Lapland for more direct flights from the UK and a choice of bases from a city to a ski resort. Choose Swedish Lapland for Kiruna and the village of Jukkasjärvi, home of the original Icehotel, and Abisko, which Swedish Lapland’s own tourism board places inside the aurora oval. Kiruna’s tourism site puts its polar night at about 28 days with no sunrise, longer than the short day Rovaniemi still gets on 21 December.

The two in one table

Both sit deep inside the Arctic and both sell the same winter trip. Their shapes are nothing alike. One is a city with fell resorts scattered out behind it. The other is a small mining town with the original Icehotel down the road.

Two currencies, and a region larger than this page

The price row does not compare, and we have left it that way on purpose. Finland prices in EUR, Sweden in SEK, and this page converts neither into the other. Rovaniemi’s museum and SantaPark publish a flat entry price on their own sites. Icehotel and the Aurora Sky Station both price through booking systems that name a figure only after you have chosen dates, and neither handed us one we could read and quote. Read that as a gap in what we could check. It is not evidence that either country is the dearer one.

“Swedish Lapland” also means far more than the corner this page weighs. The Swedish Lapland Visitors Board describes its region as running “from the mountains to the sea”, which takes in the coastal city of Luleå and communities well south of Kiruna. We compare the Kiruna, Jukkasjärvi and Abisko corner alone, because that is the part people have in mind when they set Sweden against Finland for a Northern Lights trip.

One practical note. Sweden is in the EU as Finland is, and it kept the krona when Finland took the euro. Budget in SEK once you are there. Expect your UK card to behave as it does anywhere else in the EU, subject to whatever fee your own bank charges for it.

When the answer flips

• Sweden, if sleeping inside an ice hotel is the point of the trip. Jukkasjärvi’s Icehotel is the original, rebuilt from ice and snow each winter.
