Ylläs, Finland: is it the right base for you?

The basics, before anything else

One fell, two villages, and a national park they sit inside.

Four nights on a fell this size

Four nights is the number we would book here.

One of those days goes to the slopes. The resort’s description of itself, “by far the largest ski resort in Finland” by slope length, is the argument for more than a single day on skis. Another day, at least, belongs to the marked trails, because Ylläs sits inside Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park, which the resort’s own site calls Finland’s most visited national park by visitor numbers, with hundreds of kilometres of trails for hiking, cross-country skiing and other winter sports. That leaves an evening spare for the aurora, which is the least you should hold back for it.

The Finnish Meteorological Institute puts the odds of seeing the Northern Lights on a dark, cloudless night at roughly 50% at Lapland’s ski resorts, and names Ylläs among them directly, alongside Levi and Saariselkä. Read that as the chance on a clear night. It is no promise. When a night shows nothing, cloud is usually the reason, and a quiet solar cycle the rarer one. Polar night, and the light coming back

At about 67.6°N, Ylläs and its base village Äkäslompolo sit far enough north for a true polar night. On 21 December 2026 the sun does not rise above the horizon at all. By 15 January 2027 it is back, with sunrise at 10:48 and sunset at 14:18, a day length of about 3 hours 31 minutes, and from there the light returns quickly through February and March.

Temperatures are the gap on this page, as they are on Levi’s. The Finnish Meteorological Institute’s published 1991-2020 normals gave us no station we could confidently call local to Ylläs, and a guessed average is worse than none, so there are no exact figures here. What you can assume is the regional pattern: well below freezing from November into March, and coldest in the depths of winter. Skiing, trails and dark skies

The skiing is the headline. The park around it is the larger half of the place.

Ylläs Ski Resort calls its own runs the longest in Finland, and says no other Finnish resort’s slopes differ in altitude as much. It publishes no current count of slopes or lifts on the pages we opened, so this page prints none. Our skiing guide covers what to expect from a day out.

The park is Pallas-Yllästunturi, just over 1,000 km² across a fell chain nearly 100 km long, with hundreds of kilometres of marked trails reaching well beyond Ylläs itself. Its northern section was first protected in 1938, one of Finland’s earliest national parks, and the Ylläs end was added in 2005. It is the half that earns the extra day.

Two more things are sold here.

Äkäslompolo or Ylläsjärvi

Ylläs publishes a total bed capacity of over 20,000 across cabins, hotels, hostels and campsites, and it is spread between the two villages instead of concentrated in one centre the way Levi’s accommodation is. The two villages sit on different sides of the fell, Äkäslompolo on the north and Ylläsjärvi on the south, and the ski resort runs a ski school on each side. Getting in from Kittilä

Kittilä Airport, the same airport that serves Levi, is about a 30-minute drive from Ylläs. Ylläs Express runs a dedicated transfer between the airport and Äkäslompolo and prices it by the time of your flight: 36 EUR per person for arrivals between 09:00 and 20:00, and 55 EUR per person outside those hours, with the same bands for departures. We checked those fares on 18 September 2026, and the bands can change between seasons, so confirm yours before booking. Trains stop at Kolari, the nearest station, and a shuttle bus covers the remaining 35 km to Ylläs. Ylläs’s own site suggests checking bus times and buying tickets in advance in Matkahuolto’s Matkat app, and the bus company says tickets bought through Matkahuolto cost less than on board. Once you are there, Äkäslompolo and Ylläsjärvi are each walkable in themselves, but crossing between the two villages, or reaching the national park’s trailheads, wants a car or the resort’s own transport; our getting around Lapland guide covers the options.
