Levi, Finland: is it the right base for you?
Levi is Finland’s largest ski resort, in the village of Sirkka, Kittilä municipality, 15 km from Kittilä airport. It suits skiers, snowmobilers and anyone who wants a resort with restaurants and lifts on the doorstep, and it suits it less if you want a quiet, out-of-town trip.

| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What it is | Finland’s largest ski resort, in the village of Sirkka, Kittilä municipality, western Finnish Lapland |
| Airport | Kittilä Airport, 15 km from the centre, with an airport bus, taxis and private minibuses |
| Nights it earns | Four to five, in our view: time on the slopes, and evenings to spare for the aurora |
| Ski season | Alpine and cross-country skiing opens 2 October 2026 and, Levi says, lasts until early May, with some slopes closing from mid-April |
| Darkness | The sun does not rise at all on 21 December. By 15 January the day is back to about 3 hours 27 minutes |
| Northern Lights | Roughly 50% of dark, cloudless nights, by the Finnish Meteorological Institute’s figure for Lapland’s ski resorts |
| Getting about | A walkable centre, laid out around the lifts |
Why we say four nights
Four nights gives you three full days on the slopes or on a booked activity, with one of them spare for weather. Three can work if your flight lands early. Then a storm that shuts a lift, or a cancelled tour, costs you a day you cannot get back.
Levi’s season starts early by Finnish standards, with alpine and cross-country skiing open from 2 October 2026. At the other end, a March or April booking still gets you a working resort and far longer days than midwinter.
The Finnish Meteorological Institute puts the chance of seeing the Northern Lights on a dark, cloudless night at roughly 50% at Lapland’s ski resorts, naming Levi, Ylläs and Saariselkä directly. That figure applies once the sky is clear, and cloud is the commoner reason people see nothing, so every extra night is another evening to look. How the aurora works, and how far any figure for it goes, is in our Northern Lights guide.
The sun does not rise on 21 December
Levi is further north than Rovaniemi, and it gets less light. These sun times are calculated for Kittilä, the municipality Levi sits in, at 67.667°N, because that is the entry the calculator holds; Levi itself is about 15 km further north, where the midwinter days run a little shorter still. On 21 December 2026 the sun does not clear the horizon at all, which is polar night proper. By 15 January 2027 it is back, sunrise at 10:46 and sunset at 14:14, a little under three and a half hours, and from there it lengthens quickly through February and March, the months we would point most people towards.
Levi has no long-term weather station of its own. The two nearest in the Finnish Meteorological Institute’s 1991 to 2020 normals, Muonio village about 50 km west and Kittilä Pokka about 60 km north-east, both average a January low of about -18 °C and hold 76 cm and 88 cm of snow on 15 March. Our Levi weather page sets out both stations month by month, with the snow through the ski season and the daylight at Kittilä. For the wider picture, read when to go and the month pages, Lapland in December among them.
Levi weather: where to read the forecast
For the Levi weather forecast, use the Finnish Meteorological Institute’s own local weather page for Levi, which FMI lists under Kittilä. It is the national weather service’s forecast for the resort itself. To see the conditions for yourself, Levi Ski Resort runs slope cameras, and our Lapland webcams page gathers cameras across the region. This page carries no forecast, since one would be stale the day it went up.
Levi ski resort: slopes, lifts and the season
Almost everything on offer here follows from the lifts. The company that runs the slopes, Levi Ski Resort, says the resort has 44 slopes and 26 lifts, two of them gondolas and six of them chairlifts once the new Sunny Express chairlift on the South Slopes opens for the 2026 to 2027 winter, with 38.5 km of groomed slopes in total. Those figures come from its own news release of 13 February 2026. The slopes spread across five named areas, Front, South, West, Northeast and Southeast, graded blue for beginners, red for intermediate skiers and black for advanced ones, with snow parks and a dedicated beginners’ and children’s area called Leevilandia. Levi also hosts the FIS Alpine Ski World Cup slalom opener every year.
The season is long on paper and narrower in practice. Levi says its 2026 to 2027 ski season opens on 2 October 2026, on the Front Slopes, using snow preserved from the previous winter, with more slopes opening as the winter goes on, and that it lasts until early May. Two limits sit in the same text: unlit natural-snow slopes normally open in February, once there is enough snow, and from mid-April some slopes and lifts start to close for snow storage. On windy days, Levi says, part of the lifts may be closed. So early in the season you ski the prepared runs on the Front Slopes rather than the whole resort, and the widest choice runs from February, when the natural-snow slopes open, to mid-April. Levi Ski Resort publishes the day’s open slopes and lifts on its slopes and lifts page. Our skiing guide covers what a day on the slopes involves and how Levi compares with Finland’s other ski resorts.
Levi ski pass prices and the slope map
Levi Ski Resort publishes its lift ticket prices for the 2026 to 2027 winter, which starts on 2 October 2026. At the ticket office an adult (12 to 64) pays 60 EUR for one day, 161 EUR for three days and 292 EUR for seven, and a child aged 6 to 11 or a senior over 65 pays 37 EUR, 99 EUR and 172 EUR. A winter season pass is 595 EUR for an adult. The resort says a pass bought online is always 2% cheaper than that, and 5% cheaper if you buy it at least 14 days ahead. The slope map is on the resort’s own site, as a PDF; when we looked on 25 September 2026 the file was still labelled for the 2025 to 2026 winter.
| Ticket | Adult, 12 to 64 | Child 6 to 11, senior 65+ |
|---|---|---|
| 3 hours | 54 EUR | 32 EUR |
| 1 day | 60 EUR | 37 EUR |
| 3 days | 161 EUR | 99 EUR |
| 7 days | 292 EUR | 172 EUR |
| Winter season | 595 EUR | 395 EUR |
Around the skiing sit the safaris. Operators across the resort sell husky and reindeer trips and snowmobiling, from short rides to full-day outings, and our husky safari, reindeer sleigh ride and snowmobile safari guides give durations, prices and who each one does not suit.
The sky is the other draw. Levi is one of the three Lapland resorts the Finnish Meteorological Institute names when it gives its roughly 50% figure for a clear, dark night, and our Northern Lights tour guide covers what a guided trip adds over watching from where you are staying. If you would sooner watch from bed, Levi has glass igloos and glass-roofed cabins built for exactly that; see our glass igloo guide for what one is like from the inside.
The centre, or a cabin in the fells
Levi publishes around 700 places to stay, from hotel rooms to log villas, and its own advice is to choose between “Levi’s center” and “a peaceful cabin in the fells.” The centre is right if you want restaurants, shops and the lifts inside walking distance and do not plan to hire a car. A fell-top stay, such as the glass igloos on Utsuvaara fell about 10 km out, is right for a couple who would trade convenience for quiet and a private view of the sky. Our where to stay in Levi page names specific places in each area, with the price each one publishes and who it does not suit.
Kittilä is 15 km away
Kittilä Airport is 15 km from Levi’s centre. Finnair flies daily from Helsinki year-round, and from November a wider set of direct European routes opens with Finnair, Austrian Airlines, Discover Airlines, easyJet, Eurowings, Lufthansa and Transavia, from cities including Frankfurt, Düsseldorf, Berlin, Paris, Manchester, London, Milan, Amsterdam, Zurich and Vienna. An airport bus (Tunturilinjat) meets flights and runs to Levi, alongside taxis and private minibuses; its fares are banded by distance, so check the current one on the operator’s own site before you budget for it. For the fuller UK picture, see our flights to Lapland guide.
By rail, the nearest station is Kolari, about 80 km away with a connecting bus. Rovaniemi station, served by VR’s overnight Santa Claus Express from Helsinki, is about 170 km off, also with bus connections. Driving distances from Levi are 170 km to Rovaniemi, 370 km to Oulu and 980 km to Helsinki. Once you are there the centre is walkable, and getting further afield without a car means the resort’s own shuttle and taxis, covered in our getting around Lapland guide.

Levi, Rovaniemi or Ylläs
Levi against Rovaniemi is the commonest version of this question, and our Rovaniemi vs Levi comparison sets out the trade-off directly: Rovaniemi for an easier first trip and Santa Claus Village, Levi for skiing and a resort built for winter sports. Ylläs, served by the same Kittilä airport, is the other large fell resort in this corner of Lapland, and the one to look at if Levi’s size and crowds are what is putting you off.
Who this is not for
Skip Levi as a base if you want to get away from other visitors: it is Finland’s largest and busiest ski resort, with about 700 places to stay clustered around its centre. It is also the wrong choice if you do not plan to ski, snowmobile or use the lifts, since much of what is built here serves the slopes.
